A new security pact with Brussels is a key plank of Keir Starmer\u2019s foreign policy strategy in light of moves by Donald Trump to distance himself from European security.<\/p>\n
Brussels has proposed a\u00a0\u20ac150 billion loan program for EU governments to spend on re-arming. The funds should be invested on a \u201cbuy more European\u201d basis, according to Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president.\u00a0<\/p>\n
But without a formal defense agreement with Brussels, the U.K. will be locked out of the scheme.<\/p>\n
Let down before<\/p>\n
Asked whether he had seen comments by Brexit minister Nick Thomas-Symonds hinting that he favored a more stable arrangement, Zeichner said: \u201cHe probably would say that. But what we want to do is to secure the best possible outcome that we can for U.K. fisheries, and that will be a further discussion to be held in the months ahead.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re absolutely determined to stand up to the U.K. fishing industry. The fishing industry has been let down before, and I don\u2019t intend to let that happen again.\u201d<\/p>\n
The minister\u2019s comments were welcomed by Alistair Carmichael, the Liberal Democrat MP who chairs the Environment Committee, who told him he was \u201cabsolutely on the money.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cFishermen felt that the deal that was done at the end of the Brexit negotiations was one that did not deliver what they had expected,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
