Hillary Clinton<\/a> has given her support for a bill which would allow for large society lotteries to operate in the north, saying that they could bring \u201cvital new funding<\/a>\u201d into civil society. <\/p>\n

The private member\u2019s bill, which is being proposed by Alliance\u2019s Sian Mulholland<\/a>, would allow tickets for large-scale society lotteries, such as the People\u2019s Postcode Lottery, to be sold in the north. <\/p>\n

Currently, society or charity lotteries are only allowed to operate on a small scale, with a maximum value of tickets sold capped at \u00a380,000.<\/p>\n

The proposed bill aims to expand the charity sector\u2019s ability to fundraise through society lotteries which \u201ccould provide vital financial support\u201d to organisations such as hospices, foodbanks and community programmes. <\/p>\n

In a snippet from a video message played on BBC\u2019s Good Morning Ulster, Secretary Clinton said: \u201cWhen we heard that the People\u2019s Postcode Lottery might come to Northern Ireland, we wanted to lend our voices in support. <\/p>\n

\u201cTo leaders across government and civil society, we can only say: seize this amazing opportunity. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe postcode lottery is a terrific model to engage people in charitable work.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy playing a simple game, you\u2019re helping to change your community, and the world, for the better. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a chance to bring vital new funding into Northern Ireland\u2019s civil society.\u201d<\/p>\n

The BBC has reported that the video message will be played at a reception in Stormont for the People\u2019s Postcode Lottery on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Ms Mulholland said she was \u201cdelighted\u201d to have the support of Secretary Clinton, who has served as Chancellor of Queen\u2019s University Belfast since 2020.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think she is someone who has been involved in civic society in Northern Ireland for such a long time,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

\u201cShe understands civic society here, but she also as someone who is involved in her own foundation, is aware of the benefits of a charity lottery and what it can actually provide.\u201d<\/p>\n

A public consultation on Ms Mulholland\u2019s bill opened earlier this month.<\/p>\n

It highlights the potential benefits of large-scale society lotteries in the north and cites their contribution to the charity and voluntary sector in Great Britain, where rules are more relaxed. <\/p>\n
