{"id":1166732,"date":"2026-08-24T14:16:22","date_gmt":"2026-08-24T14:16:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1166732\/"},"modified":"2026-08-24T14:16:22","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T14:16:22","slug":"eu-russian-aircraft-help-serbia-battle-wildfires-climate-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1166732\/","title":{"rendered":"EU, Russian aircraft help Serbia battle wildfires | Climate News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">EU crews and a Russian aircraft help Serbia fight major wildfires as extreme heat and drought fuel fires across the Balkans.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"avatar\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-hidden=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/author\/al_jazeera_staff_150119130629458\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787580982_366_2017-06-08T131939Z_1189275883_RC11B0FE7F20_RTRMADP_3_GULF-QATAR-JAZEERA-1714943623.jpg\"   aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Published On 24 Aug 202624 Aug 2026<\/p>\n<p>Russian and European Union aircraft have been helping Serbian teams battle wildfires burning across the country, including a blaze that has raged for weeks in a protected nature reserve near the capital, Belgrade, according to state media.<\/p>\n<p>The operation in Deliblatska Pescara continued into Monday, as Serbia\u2019s RTS reported that efforts were also underway to extinguish a separate fire in the southwestern Stolovi mountain range.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>Serbia\u2019s Interior Minister, Ivica Dacic, described the situation as \u201cextremely difficult,\u201d according to Euro News, with more than 400 personnel deployed to Deliblatska Pescara\u00a0each day.<\/p>\n<p>President Aleksandar Vucic said Belgrade had turned to both the EU and Russia once it became clear Serbia\u2019s own resources were not enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe very second we realised that our own forces were no longer sufficient, we immediately requested urgent assistance from Russia and the European mechanism,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Russia deployed an Ilyushin Il-76 water-bombing aircraft on Wednesday, and according to RTS, it had dropped 168 tonnes of water on the two fires on Sunday \u2014 126 tonnes in Deliblatska Pescara and 42 tonnes in Stolovi.<\/p>\n<p>The EU response includes four Black Hawk helicopters from Romania, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, along with teams of firefighters and vehicles from Germany and Romania.<\/p>\n<p>Serbia is not an EU member but can request aid under the bloc\u2019s Civil Protection Mechanism, a system that allows EU countries to pool emergency resources for disasters.
