Andy Burnham<\/a> has praised Ukraine for \u201ckeeping the flame of European freedom alive\u201d, comparing it to Britain\u2019s pivotal role in World War II.<\/p>\n

“Despite Russia’s outrageous threats to my country we will continue our support for Ukraine,” the PM said in his first international speech in front of St Sofia cathedral in Kyiv to mark the 35th anniversary of the nation’s independence.<\/p>\n

He added: “This is the moment to keep up the pressure on Russia, the moment to squeeze their ability to fund this illegal war.\u201d<\/p>\n

Burnham is set to give Ukraine<\/a> blueprints for the British Storm Shadow<\/a> long-range missile, a move expected to give the war-ravaged nation an advantage in striking military targets deep inside Russian territory.<\/p>\n

The leader arrived in Kyiv<\/a> this morning, just hours after at least three people were killed in a Russian attack on the outskirts of Kharkiv<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It is his first overseas visit for the leader, more than a month after entering Downing Street, and it comes as Kyiv<\/a> and Moscow<\/a> continued to exchange devastating attacks overnight.<\/p>\n

“Ukraine’s security is our security,” \u200cBurnham said in a statement, adding that Britain would stand by Ukraine “for as long as it takes”.<\/p>\n

King Charles and Queen Camilla have congratulated Ukraine on Independence Day, praising the nation for its \u201cunwavering determination\u201d in the war.<\/p>\n

In a statement posted by the British Embassy in Kyiv, His Majesty said: \u201cBoth my wife and I send our sincere and special wishes to you and to all Ukrainians for the possibility of peace, security and prosperity in the year ahead.”<\/p>\n

Charles added that he continues to draw inspiration from the strong friendship between the two countries.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Two children among 20 injured in Russian strike on apartment block<\/p>\n

At least 20 people have been wounded in a Russian attack on an apartment building in the centre of Chernihiv earlier today.<\/p>\n

Two children aged 12 and 17 are among the wounded, according to the city military administration.<\/p>\n

A fire broke out at the site of the strike and firefighters are tackling the raging flames.<\/p>\n

Footage from the scene show the plumes of smoke rising from the wreckage.<\/p>\n

<\/a>10 Ukrainian soldiers captured from Donets returned in latest exchange<\/p>\n

Ten Ukrainian soldiers who were considered \u201cmissing in action\u201d have been returned to Ukraine through Belarus on Independence Day.<\/p>\n

Sharing photos of the men draped in Ukrainian flags, Volodymyr Zelensky said: \u201cThey defended the country in the Donetsk sector. <\/p>\n

\u201cAll of them had been considered missing in action. And it is very important that we managed to bring them back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their return is part of the latest exchange of captured fighters between the warring sides.<\/p>\n

Volodymyr Zelensky has urged Ukraine\u2019s leading arms manufacturer, Fire Point, to accelerate production of its Flamingo cruise missile to take the fight to Russia this winter.<\/p>\n

While praising the achievements of the defence industry during the war – \u2060including strikes with naval drones – the president said there was more work to do to counter the Kremlin\u2019s ballistic terror.<\/p>\n

Fire Point makes 100 long-range missiles and thousands of drones a month – and is crucial to the military\u2019s deep-strike capability.<\/p>\n

Zelensky insisted that production should be ramped up and that \u201cFlamingos should not be a rare species but birds arriving en masse.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey must ‘winter’ in Russia,” the Ukrainian leader said.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cOur mid-range strikes are cutting their logistics. Our long-range capabilities are cutting their profits. <\/p>\n

\u201cThousands of our deep strikes have already been seen in Moscow, Tuapse, Tula, Ryazan, Olenya, Omsk, and dozens more places where our Ukrainian justice has already reached. Russia must see more of this justice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reform deputy leader Richard Tice has said that Andy Burnham “is doing the right thing on his first foreign trip” to Ukraine.<\/p>\n
