{"id":1167184,"date":"2026-08-24T19:36:21","date_gmt":"2026-08-24T19:36:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1167184\/"},"modified":"2026-08-24T19:36:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T19:36:21","slug":"chris-bryant-bored-of-stormont-budget-sticking-plaster-approach-the-irish-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1167184\/","title":{"rendered":"Chris Bryant \u2018bored\u2019 of Stormont budget \u2018sticking plaster\u2019 approach \u2013 The Irish News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Northern Ireland Secretary has said he is \u201cbored\u201d with the \u201csticking plaster\u201d approach to Stormont\u2019s finance problems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Sir Chris Bryant said he is in talks with parties and aiming to \u201cget to a place where we have a multi-year budget\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The power-sharing executive in Northern Ireland is still to agree a budget for the current financial year, with departments operating on contingency budgets since April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Stormont ministers signed a collective letter to Prime Minister Andy Burnham calling for \u201ca fair funding envelope\u201d saying the current level of finance from London \u201cdoes not provide a sufficient basis to fund public services\u201d in the region.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/how-landmark-railway-bridge-restored-heart-of-popular-northern-ireland-seaside-destination-MKBRHC35TVG2TFDD5VQ5PN6NKQ\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"How &#x2018;landmark&#x2019; railway bridge restored  heart of popular Northern Ireland seaside destination\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787600179_227_YBLK63MUTJHLFGXUGQYXZV7U2E.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/where-we-doing-the-right-thing-the-holy-cross-story-seen-through-the-eyes-of-those-who-walked-the-gauntlet-of-hate-YB5JGE2UENAADHI5IIFGC3VIPM\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Were we &#x2018;doing the right thing&#x2019;?: Holy Cross through the eyes of those who walked the gauntlet of hate\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MZWYKIAN5JCSTE5EMJM276KPXY.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Finance Minister John O&#x2019;Dowd, senator Conor Murphy and Minister for the Economy Caoimhe Archibald met Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Chris Bryant\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SR5HBR4VVNP6DBD43YSU4YQT3Q.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"559\"\/>Finance Minister John O\u2019Dowd, senator Conor Murphy and Minister for the Economy Caoimhe Archibald met Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Chris Bryant (Oliver McVeigh\/PA) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In January this year, Sinn F\u00e9in Finance Minister John O\u2019Dowd unveiled a draft three-year budget but it was not agreed by other executive parties, highlighting \u201cmassive impacts\u201d to public services with available funding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The UK Treasury has stepped in multiple times in the past to provide one-off payments or loans to Stormont to overcome budgetary issues, most recently with a \u00a3400 million reserve claim to be repaid over three years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Asked by reporters in Dublin if Mr Burnham would be visiting Northern Ireland with news of additional financial support for Stormont, Sir Chris said: \u201cWe need to make sure that Stormont gets to a budget, a settled budget,<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cNot just for this year, because I\u2019m bored with this kind of sticking plaster issue of, we pour a little bit more cash in every year when there are troubles \u2013 we need to get to a several-year settlement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m going to be having discussions with people later on this week and then again next week to get to a place where we have a multi-year budget and we sort out the financial pressures that the Stormont government has got.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He later said: \u201cI think it would be a good idea if Northern Ireland were to look at some self-help, as it were, in terms of revenue-raising as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m a Welsh MP. My constituency is in the South Wales valleys and we have to do quite a lot of raising our own revenue in Wales, and those are some of the issues that I want to talk through with the Executive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI believe in devolution.
