Instead, the company is pursuing FDA clearance to detect and treat sleep apnea, a pivot it hopes will turn a bougie tech gadget into a business that insurers, not just billionaires, will pay for.<\/p>\n<p>Matteo Franceschetti, Eight Sleep\u2019s cofounder and chief executive, told Fortune the company\u2019s filing with the FDA is progressing \u201cfairly smoothly.\u201d The company began pursuing clearance with the FDA for its sleep apnea detection and mitigation technologies in 2025 and is conducting clinical studies in support of its submissions.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the company has only published <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11048088\/\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11048088\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one independent study<\/a> on the Pod\u2019s benefits, alongside several study <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.researchsquare.com\/article\/rs-8680806\/v1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchsquare.com\/article\/rs-8680806\/v1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">preprints<\/a> that were both directionally positive but not yet independently verified. There are several studies, however, funded by Eight Sleep, on <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/sleep\/article\/47\/Supplement_1\/A229\/7654870\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/sleep\/article\/47\/Supplement_1\/A229\/7654870\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sleep apnea<\/a> that have been <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/sleep\/article\/47\/Supplement_1\/A229\/7654748\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/sleep\/article\/47\/Supplement_1\/A229\/7654748\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in scientific journals. Eight Sleep also collects and has a massive cache of user data that, when aggregated and de-identified, can be used to identify broader trends and support research, reports, and studies on sleep and health.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FDA clearance for sleep apnea detection would likely put Eight Sleep in more rigorous regulatory lane as Apple\u2019s Watch and Samsung\u2019s Galaxy Watch and Ring, both<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/scripts\/cdrh\/cfdocs\/cfpmn\/denovo.cfm?id=DEN230041\" href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/scripts\/cdrh\/cfdocs\/cfpmn\/denovo.cfm?id=DEN230041\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> cleared by the FDA<\/a> since 2024 to flag sleep apnea \u201crisk.\u201d The FDA has a lower bar for the detection of apnea\u2014snoring so bad that the sleeper stops breathing\u2014than diagnosis. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eight Sleep is pursuing the more clinical prescription-based diagnostic aid of which there are also existing<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12673496\/table\/tab2\/\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12673496\/table\/tab2\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> home sleep-testing devices<\/a>. While the Apple Watch can tell users they have signs of apnea, Eight Sleep is hedging it will be able to quantify apnea events per hour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In August 2026, Eight Sleep<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/uae\/2026\/08\/07\/abu-dhabi-to-test-high-tech-mattress-using-ai-to-ease-sleep-apnoea\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/uae\/2026\/08\/07\/abu-dhabi-to-test-high-tech-mattress-using-ai-to-ease-sleep-apnoea\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> also began a clinical trial<\/a> with Abu Dhabi\u2019s Department of Health, testing whether its product, the Pod, can automatically reposition sleep apnea patients, and therefore become an alternative to a CPAP machine. U.S. consumer health-tech firms are increasingly using the emirate\u2019s Department of Health as a springboard for medical credibility. Just weeks before Eight Sleep\u2019s announcement, Oura signed its own<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.doh.gov.ae\/en\/news\/doh-and-oura-partner-to-advance-preventive-health-in-abu-dhabi\" href=\"https:\/\/www.doh.gov.ae\/en\/news\/doh-and-oura-partner-to-advance-preventive-health-in-abu-dhabi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> joint research program with DoH<\/a> on women\u2019s health and cardiometabolic risk, while Whoop landed a<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.whoop.com\/us\/en\/press-center\/mubadala-partners-with-whoop-to-strengthen-preventative-health-and-research-capabilitie\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whoop.com\/us\/en\/press-center\/mubadala-partners-with-whoop-to-strengthen-preventative-health-and-research-capabilitie\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> $75 million investment and research partnership with Mubadala<\/a> to validate its biomarker labs in what became its first market outside the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal, Franceschetti said, is to get insurers to treat the Pod like a medical device rather than an out-of-pocket luxury. The company told Fortune it\u2019s actively working on making the Pod more affordable, though it isn\u2019t yet clear how it gets there without a different cost structure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eight Sleep\u2019s Pod already qualifies for HSA and FSA reimbursement through the fintech Truemed. Built-in sensors track heart rate, breathing, and movement, and an AI model adjusts temperature through the night and generates a sleep score. Automatic control and tracking require an ongoing $199-to-$399 annual subscription; without it, users get manual temperature buttons only.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both billionaires are among executives, athletes, and celebrities who credit the company with transforming their sleep. Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc is on its investor cap table and F1\u2019s Aston Martin Aramco<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.astonmartinf1.com\/en-GB\/news\/announcement\/aston-martin-aramco-turns-to-eight-sleep-to-support-competitive-edge\" href=\"https:\/\/www.astonmartinf1.com\/en-GB\/news\/announcement\/aston-martin-aramco-turns-to-eight-sleep-to-support-competitive-edge\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> signed on<\/a> as a team partner in February 2026 in a reportedly <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bizofspeed.com\/p\/when-silicon-valley-meets-f1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bizofspeed.com\/p\/when-silicon-valley-meets-f1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201ceight-figure\u201d deal<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In March, Eight Sleep<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/03\/04\/eight-sleep-raises-50m-at-1-5b-valuation\/\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/03\/04\/eight-sleep-raises-50m-at-1-5b-valuation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> raised $50 million<\/a> from Tether, the company behind the world\u2019s biggest stablecoin, at a $1.5 billion valuation. Last year, the company was profitable. Franceschetti\u2019s ambition, he told Fortune, is to become \u201cthe biggest health technology company in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Milan to San Francisco<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Franceschetti is neither an engineer nor a doctor. He trained as a securities lawyer at a large Milan firm, in a family of lawyers, judges and doctors, and describes himself as \u201cthe bad guy\u201d for straying into business; his father\u2019s death at the end of 2008 pushed him toward something riskier. He calls himself part race car driver, bold and ambitious, and part lawyer, intellectually disciplined, a combination he credits for keeping a hardware startup alive against long odds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2014, Franceschetti, Massimo Andreasi Bassi, and Alexandra Zatarain started Eight Sleep out of a garage, where the team built its first prototype and threw a \u201cpajama party\u201d to demo it for investors. Zatarain, then 24, wrote the pitch deck in a few hours and joined that night; she is married to Franceschetti and now runs brand and marketing, while Bassi became chief technology officer. An Indiegogo campaign brought in more than $1.2 million (well over the $100,000 goal) and about 8,000 pre-orders before the product existed, proof of demand the founders used to get into Y Combinator\u2019s 2015 class after two rejections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decade since has been a steady climb through funding rounds rather than one big break: a<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.eightsleep.com\/blog\/series-b-funding-khosla-ventures\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eightsleep.com\/blog\/series-b-funding-khosla-ventures\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> $14 million Series B<\/a> in 2018 led by Khosla Ventures, an<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/08\/30\/eight-sleep-raises-86m-as-its-smart-mattress-and-sleep-fitness-technology-approach-500m-valuation\/\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/08\/30\/eight-sleep-raises-86m-as-its-smart-mattress-and-sleep-fitness-technology-approach-500m-valuation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> $86 million Series C<\/a> in 2021 near a $500 million valuation, a<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/08\/19\/eight-sleep-grabs-100m-to-bring-ai-into-your-bed\/\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/08\/19\/eight-sleep-grabs-100m-to-bring-ai-into-your-bed\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> $100 million Series D<\/a> in August 2025 near $1 billion, and the Tether round in March 2026 that pushed the valuation to $1.5 billion.\u00a0 The company has raised more than $310 million total.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The numbers behind the hype<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eight Sleep has never disclosed revenue, and Franceschetti dodged specifics with Fortune. Third-party estimates<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/ecdb.com\/resources\/sample-data\/retailer\/eightsleep\" href=\"https:\/\/ecdb.com\/resources\/sample-data\/retailer\/eightsleep\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> pegged 2025 revenue<\/a> at roughly $264 million, flat with 2024, though Franceschetti disputes that, saying revenue has grown \u201cclose to 30x\u201d since the Pod\u2019s 2019 launch, that the company was profitable in 2025, and that cumulative Pod sales exceed $500 million. Eight Sleep now sells in 35 countries, including a 2026 launch in China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you look at the DNA of our people, the way we think, probably Oura, Whoop, Garmin, we\u2019re probably in the same ballpark,\u201d Franceschetti said, noting roughly 85% of Eight Sleep customers already own a wearable. His pricing analogy is Tesla: the Pod is the Model S, a premium flagship meant to fund cheaper models later. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to be luxury at all,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The smart-mattress category Eight Sleep wants to escape just delivered a cautionary tale. Sleep Number, the unit-share leader,<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/12\/mattress-company-sleep-number-bankruptcy-sale.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/12\/mattress-company-sleep-number-bankruptcy-sale.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> filed for Chapter 11 in June 2026<\/a> with $672 million in debt after net sales fell 16%; Sleep Country Canada<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/litigation\/mattress-company-sleep-number-sells-assets-700-million-bankruptcy-2026-07-20\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/litigation\/mattress-company-sleep-number-sells-assets-700-million-bankruptcy-2026-07-20\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> bought its assets<\/a> a month later for $701 million. Eight Sleep, direct-to-consumer with roughly 100 employees, says it has avoided that trap.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Market-size estimates vary widely, from a<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.gminsights.com\/industry-analysis\/smart-mattress-market\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gminsights.com\/industry-analysis\/smart-mattress-market\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> $1.87 billion<\/a> global smart mattress category to<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.fortunebusinessinsights.com\/smart-bed-market-106266\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fortunebusinessinsights.com\/smart-bed-market-106266\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> nearly $5 billion<\/a> by other counts. Franceschetti\u2019s preferred comparison is wearable-health brands: Oura,<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/oura-ring-maker-be-valued-around-11-billion-with-latest-raise-bloomberg-news-2025-09-22\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/oura-ring-maker-be-valued-around-11-billion-with-latest-raise-bloomberg-news-2025-09-22\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> valued around $11 billion<\/a>, and WHOOP,<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.whoop.com\/us\/en\/press-center\/whoop-announces-series-g-funding\/?srsltid=AfmBOorEaAacFsv6oDTxaFSypGgq6Bf1SYRe30DEtKNKeSvnhV1qvzVZ\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whoop.com\/us\/en\/press-center\/whoop-announces-series-g-funding\/?srsltid=AfmBOorEaAacFsv6oDTxaFSypGgq6Bf1SYRe30DEtKNKeSvnhV1qvzVZ\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> valued at $10.1 billion<\/a>. \u201cWe see ourselves as a completely different market that literally doesn\u2019t exist,\u201d Zatarain told Fortune.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem Eight Sleep is chasing is real regardless of which market number is right. Roughly 30.5% of American adults<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/products\/databriefs\/db559.htm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/products\/databriefs\/db559.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> sleep fewer than seven hours<\/a> a night, per the CDC, and RAND Europe estimates insufficient sleep costs the U.S. up to $411 billion a year. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine says undiagnosed sleep apnea alone<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/aasm.org\/new-national-indicator-report-details-importance-prompt-sleep-apnea-diagnosis-treatment\/\" href=\"https:\/\/aasm.org\/new-national-indicator-report-details-importance-prompt-sleep-apnea-diagnosis-treatment\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> costs the country nearly $150 billion<\/a> a year, the exact condition Eight Sleep\u2019s FDA filing targets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From charity to business plan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Franceschetti said the most consequential part of Eight Sleep\u2019s future has nothing to do with billionaires or race cars.
