Olivia Rodrigo<\/a>\u00a0has officially released her\u00a0politically-charged\u00a0new song \u2018Serena Joy\u2019 on streaming platforms \u2013\u00a0listen\u00a0below.<\/p>\n

The song was first\u00a0made available on a limited run of just 500 CDs<\/a>, all sold exclusively at Analog Record Shop in Tustin, California on Friday (August 21), a store just miles from\u00a0Rodrigo\u2019s upcoming Daisy Chain Fields festival<\/a>.\u00a0All 500 copies sold out that day.<\/p>\n

Now, Rodrigo has confirmed that the song has been added to major streaming platforms, writing on Instagram earlier today (August 24): \u201cSurprise!!! Serena Joy out on streaming platforms now. A\u00a0portion\u00a0of all net proceeds go to Daisy Chain Fields Fund.\u00a0I love this song so\u00a0much!!!!\u201d<\/p>\n

The track takes its name from Serena Joy Waterford, a central character in Margaret Atwood\u2019s 1985 dystopian novel\u00a0The Handmaid\u2019s Tale. Serena helps\u00a0establish\u00a0the patriarchal and authoritarian regime of Gilead, only to find herself stripped of rights and freedoms by the system she promoted.<\/p>\n

The song also takes on cruel, oppressive systems\u00a0and the people who benefit from them, with Rodrigo singing: \u201cCome a little bit closer, sing along, sing along \/ What they tell you to do \/ Comin\u2019 around the corner \/ If they do it to them, they\u2019ll do it to you\u201c.<\/p>\n

Rodrigo recorded the song during the sessions for her third album \u2018You Seem Pretty Sad\u00a0For\u00a0A\u00a0Girl So\u00a0In\u00a0Love\u2019,\u00a0which was released in June, but it did not make the final\u00a0record\u2019s\u00a0tracklist.<\/p>\n

NME\u00a0gave the new album a four-and-a-half-star review<\/a>, writing: \u201cMore than any other Rodrigo album, you feel emotionally spent by the end of \u2018You Seem Pretty Sad\u00a0For\u00a0A\u00a0Girl So\u00a0In\u00a0Love\u2019,\u00a0but in the best way possible. The schedule contains no overlapping performances<\/a>, and proceeds will support organisations advocating for women and girls.<\/p>\n

Rodrigo will also\u00a0begin\u00a0her \u2018Unraveled\u2019 world tour in North America next month<\/a>, before arriving in the UK and Europe in 2027.\u00a0Ticketmaster recently cancelled tickets acquired by suspected touts for the shows<\/a>, making them available to fans again at face value.<\/p>\n
