{"id":1168255,"date":"2026-08-25T08:58:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T08:58:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1168255\/"},"modified":"2026-08-25T08:58:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T08:58:12","slug":"cody-gakpo-defining-blow-for-tottenham-as-liverpool-decision-comes-to-light-after-man-city-hijack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1168255\/","title":{"rendered":"Cody Gakpo: Defining blow for Tottenham as Liverpool decision comes to light after Man City hijack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/liverpool\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Liverpool<\/a> have no intention of allowing Cody Gakpo to leave this summer to Tottenham or anywhere else and could wait until the January transfer window to sell, according to reports.<\/p>\n<p>The Reds are looking to bring in two more wingers before the transfer deadline on September 1 with Paris Saint-Germain\u2019s Bradley Barcola and Brighton\u2019s Yankuba Minteh emerging as their top two options to improve on both sides.<\/p>\n<p>Many outlets have reported that if they sign both players then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/liverpool\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Liverpool<\/strong><\/a> will allow Gakpo to leave Anfield with the Netherlands international open to moving to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/tottenham-hotspur\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Tottenham<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Spurs already have an agreement over personal terms with Gakpo and Romano insisted in his update earlier on Tuesday that Liverpool \u201care not selling\u201d the Dutchman \u201cuntil they get two wingers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ILqhv1vRXpw\" target=\"_blank\">Romano said on his YouTube channel<\/a>: \u201cThe meeting for Cody Gakpo took place, but do not forget that Tottenham have an agreement with the player.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTottenham agreed personal terms with Gakpo. The top target is Bradley Barcola and then one more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite Romano hinting that Liverpool are ready to sell Gakpo if two wingers arrive, <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.teamtalk.com\/liverpool\/cody-gakpo-transfer-fsg-final-decision-man-city-tottenham-hotspur-target\" target=\"_blank\">our friends at TEAMtalk are insisting that<\/a> Liverpool \u2018have no intention of allowing the Netherlands international to leave this summer\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Man City have now joined the race for Gakpo \u2018as a possible replacement\u2019 for Omar Marmoush, who is set to join Tottenham in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>The report adds: \u2018The Dutchman is understood to be attracted to Tottenham because Spurs have given him assurances that he would be central to De Zerbi\u2019s plans, with the intention of using him predominantly as a No.9.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018However, Liverpool sources point to the weekend as further evidence of just how highly Iraola rates Gakpo, with the Spaniard impressed by his attitude and having now made it clear he wants to keep the Dutchman around irrespective of who else the Reds sign before the window slams shut.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/news\/opening-weekend-players-could-still-transfer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Five players who featured on the opening weekend but could still be on the move<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is understood that Liverpool \u2018may insist on keeping Gakpo until at least the January window, even if the player continues to push for a move\u2019 with Hugo Ekitike currently out injured.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Liverpool \u2018need to resist any temptation to cash in on Cody Gakpo\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/news\/tottenham-cody-gakpo-new-official-bid-mudryk-plan-b-chelsea\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The Athletic\u2018s James Pearce is hoping<\/strong><\/a> that Liverpool refuse all advances for Gakpo with the Netherlands international offering versality in the Reds attack.<\/p>\n<p>Pearce wrote: \u2018Even if [Liverpool] get Paris Saint-Germain\u2019s Bradley Barcola on board, they need to resist any temptation to cash in on Cody Gakpo, who has been pursued by Tottenham Hotspur.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Gakpo, who scored their first equaliser at St James\u2019 Park with a clinical 20-yarder, provides the added value of being able to operate through the middle as well as off the left, so the Dutchman can deputise for Isak when required.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Liverpool Echo\u2018s Ian Doyle agreed, he wrote: \u2018Cody Gakpo was easily Liverpool\u2019s most potent attacker here and looks anything but a player who would welcome a move away.
