But one criticism which deserves more airspace is the idea that international football has become more attuned to the transfer market.

<img decoding="async" data-chromatic="ignore" alt="What time and channel is LASK V Celtic on? Every player born in Northern Ireland grows up with dual eligibility built in.

Under the Good Friday Agreement’s citizenship provisions, they’re entitled to an Irish passport, a British one, or both. Though when it comes to the allegiances of talented footballers, the situation will never not be messy.

This time it’s Ceadach O’Neill.

Two senior caps for Northern Ireland, a Kilrea upbringing, a GAA background in the family, his uncles Eoin and Paddy Bradley having played for Derry, and a path that took him from Linfield’s first team at 15 to Arsenal’s academy at 16.

However, when asked about his international future during a pre-season appearance at the Aviva Stadium with the Gunners, he did little to shut down talk of a switch.

Liverpool’s Conor Bradley has 30 senior caps for Northern Ireland (Adam Davy/PA)

Predictably, the Conor Bradley debate has been dragged up again too, with Northern Ireland supporters arguing he would never have considered the Republic while others argue the FAI’s slow approach cost them.

Neither position is correct. Unless you’re Conor Bradley or someone extremely close to the situation, everything else is noise.

That’s the pattern running through all of this.

We’re quick to sort young footballers into boxes based on our own biases, then go looking for signs to justify whichever box we’ve already picked.

Played for Linfield or Rangers? Must be NI. Came through Celtic or played GAA? Must have his heart set on the Republic. None of it tells you anything real.

Family, upbringing, timing, who picks up the phone first, who gets a cap in before anyone else can; it all plays a part, and no single thread explains the whole picture.

The birthright for someone born in Northern Ireland to represent the Republic holds real merit.

I’m also uncomfortable with the idea of forcing young adults into making such significant decisions under public pressure.

It’s 2026. We can, and should, be better than reducing a teenager’s future to another tribal scoreline.

Whether Ceadach O’Neill continues with Northern Ireland or his heart eventually lies with the Republic, it is his decision, and his family’s, to make in their own time.

Much to the dismay of many, I have always maintained that dual nationality and heritage are complex, and certainly not a black-and-white debate.

We should stop treating it like one.

Bill Gaine is the creator of IFB Football Media on Facebook and X which specialises in Irish soccer.

On Monday morning, news emerged that the FAI had not given up hope on Arsenal teenager Ceadach O’Neill…

[5011
61271,132076,1144,16,15
post-1169177","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-northern-ireland","tag-fai","tag-ifa","tag-northern-ireland","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom
["GET
