{"id":117044,"date":"2025-05-20T12:25:12","date_gmt":"2025-05-20T12:25:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/117044\/"},"modified":"2025-05-20T12:25:12","modified_gmt":"2025-05-20T12:25:12","slug":"british-seas-being-invaded-by-huge-european-octopuses-whove-swum-from-mediterranean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/117044\/","title":{"rendered":"British seas being invaded by huge European octopuses who&#8217;ve swum from Mediterranean"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BRITISH seas have been invaded by huge European octopuses devouring our crabs and lobsters.<\/p>\n<p>The creatures have swum from the Mediterranean to the coast of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/devon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Devon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/cornwall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cornwall<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They break into crab and lobster pots \u201ctotally destroying\u201d the seafood.<\/p>\n<p>Fishermen have urged authorities to relax a bylaw stopping them selling 5kg octopus they find in their pots for \u00a37 per kilo to eager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/spain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One, Brian Tapper from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/plymouth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plymouth<\/a>, said: \u201cThis time of year we\u2019d normally see 60 to 100kg of lobster a day and 500-800kg of crab.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast week we had 8kg of lobster and 50kg of crab.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Suspending the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">law<\/a> means we could ride out this Biblical invasion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/devon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Devon<\/a> &amp; Severn Fisheries Authority ruled boats can exclusively target octopus.<\/p>\n<p>But they cannot keep any found trapped in crab or lobster pots.<\/p>\n<p>Watch as male model is dragged underwater by OCTOPUS &#8211; as beast crawls over his body &amp; snares him in its tentacles<a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) underwater.\" height=\"640\" width=\"960\" data-credit=\"\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GettyImages-479310160jpg-JS407972171.jpg\" data-caption=\"British seas have been invaded by huge European octopuses\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GettyImages-479310160jpg-JS407972171.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>1<\/p>\n<p>British seas have been invaded by huge European octopuses<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"BRITISH seas have been invaded by huge European octopuses devouring our crabs and lobsters.
