{"id":117091,"date":"2025-05-20T12:51:15","date_gmt":"2025-05-20T12:51:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/117091\/"},"modified":"2025-05-20T12:51:15","modified_gmt":"2025-05-20T12:51:15","slug":"bristol-teens-shocking-revelation-on-younger-kids-carrying-knives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/117091\/","title":{"rendered":"Bristol teen&#8217;s shocking revelation on younger kids carrying knives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8216;Children can&#8217;t relax&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35 __className_4d02ca\">Annette Belcher<\/strong> Digital Publishing Editor<\/p>\n<p>13:15, 20 May 2025<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_UoB-Empty-Shirts-Lost-Childhoods-Exhibition-Bristol_BMS6623.jpg\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Empty Shirts, Lost Childhoods Exhibition, The Lord Mayors Chapel, Bristol<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Bristol teenagers have taken part in a moving exhibition in the city showcasing the devastating consequences of knife crime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The \u2018Empty shirts, Lost Childhoods\u2019 exhibition has seen more than 150 teens from across Bristol use a white school shirt as a canvas to show their thoughts and emotions on knife crime and the serious violence that has plagued the city in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Amongst the compelling messages shared on the shirts were, \u2018Protect one another\u2019, \u2018Be brave choose safety\u2019, \u2018Stop the cycle\u2019, \u2018Love is freedom\u2019, \u2018Stay humble, stay safe, \u2018Bullying isn\u2019t always physical\u2019, and \u2018I see humans, but no humanity&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Many designs featured poems, lyrics, and memorials for lives lost through the violence of knife crime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The creations formed part of a project, led by researchers at the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/university-of-bristol\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Bristol<\/a> in partnership with local youth organisations and schools, as part of national Knife Crime Awareness Week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Project participants Luchia Avery and Eva Morne-Edwards gave readings at the exhibition opening event, held in the Lord Mayor\u2019s Chapel in Bristol on Monday (May 19).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_UoB-Empty-Shirts-Lost-Childhoods-Exhibition-Bristol_BMS6754JPG.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Luchia Avery and Eva Morne-Edwards, aged 13, giving readings about knife crimes at the opening of the \u2018Empty shirts, Lost Childhoods\u2019 exhibition in Bristol(Image: Bhagesh Sachania Photography)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Luchia, aged 13, said: \u201cI\u2019m really glad I did it so it makes the community more aware. Children cannot relax because kids my age or younger are carrying knives. Change needs to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Bristol Youth Council member Ellen Sheehy, aged 16, decorated her shirt with scores of pink and purple rhinestones representing knife crime incidents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Sign up to receive daily news updates and breaking news alerts straight to your inbox for free <strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3r1T6AI\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"hereLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">She said: \u201cI think it\u2019s a really powerful way of saying goodbye to school and a way of expressing how you feel about youth violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Barnardo\u2019s, Empire Fighting Chance, City of Bristol College and YouthMoves were among the organisations involved with the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Project lead Dr Jade Levell, Senior Lecturer in Social and Public Policy at the University of Bristol, said: \u201cThe response has been overwhelmingly powerful and positive. At this time of year many young people will be writing on school shirts as they graduate from formal education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cChildren involved in youth violence often miss out on this important milestone and this exhibition shines a light on an issue which affects all young people in many different ways.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;Their creations so brilliantly show how the problem goes beyond knives and when you let them lead the conversation, there is so much for us to learn about how they feel and what they want to change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/21_May_knife_crime_awareness_image_1JPG.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Ellen Sheehy, aged 16, holds her rhinestone decorated school shirt, which formed part of the \u2018Empty shirts, Lost Childhoods\u2019 exhibition in the Lord Mayor\u2019s Chapel(Image: University of Bristol)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Knife Crime Awareness Week, which runs from May 19 to Sunday, May 25, is an annual campaign by The Ben Kinsella Trust to highlight the complexity of the problem, its devastating impact, and prevention work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Clare Moody, Avon &amp; Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner, said: \u201cThis exhibition powerfully highlights that too many of our children miss out on having a childhood, miss out on feeling safe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThe University took an interdisciplinary approach and we, as partners, must do the same. Above all, we won\u2019t achieve change if we don\u2019t listen to our children. These shirts show us how powerful their voices are, when we listen with the purpose of taking action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Jon Yates, Chief Executive of the national Youth Endowment Fund, said: \u201cHalf of our teenage children say that they have changed their behaviour in some way because they are worried about violence. It\u2019s on us as the adults to listen hard, find out what works to change children\u2019s lives and make it happen.
