{"id":117107,"date":"2025-05-20T12:59:19","date_gmt":"2025-05-20T12:59:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/117107\/"},"modified":"2025-05-20T12:59:19","modified_gmt":"2025-05-20T12:59:19","slug":"leeds-united-set-to-trigger-unprecedented-1bn-reveal-as-official-paperwork-filed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/117107\/","title":{"rendered":"Leeds United set to trigger unprecedented \u00a31bn reveal as official paperwork filed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Leeds United\u2019s return to the Premier League has set the wheels in motion for a financial story far bigger than the \u00a3200m-plus windfall they\u2019re set to receive in the top flight.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leedsunited.news\/club\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Leeds<\/a> have successfully scaled the cliff face between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leedsunited.news\/tag\/championship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Championship<\/a> and top flight. Significantly, if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leedsunited.news\/tag\/daniel-farke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Farke\u2019s<\/a> side had failed to go up this term, 2025-26 would have been their final year of parachute payments, which are drastically reduced in the third season following relegation in any case.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leedsunited.news\/tag\/49ers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">49ers<\/a> were aware of the risks inherent to investing in English football when they first bought into the club back in 2018, gradually increasing their stake before seizing full control almost two years ago. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a very, very different business project to their interests in the NFL, where profits are guaranteed and the closed-shop franchise system is set up with owners \u2013 not sporting merit or fans \u2013 in mind.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leedsunited.news\/news\/a-summary-of-leeds-uniteds-23-24-financial-accounts-as-revenue-down-33\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Leeds haven\u2019t posted a single year of profit since 2017<\/a>. Even then, the surplus was less than \u00a31m.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Leeds-United-profit-and-loss-2.png\" alt=\"Chart showing profit and loss of Leeds United\" class=\"wp-image-80563\" \/>Leeds United profit and loss chart<\/p>\n<p>Credit: Adam Williams\/LeedsUnited.News\/GRV Media<\/p>\n<p>Since 2004, when the club generated what was essentially an artificial \u00a370m profit as \u00a396m worth of loans were written off, Leeds have posted cumulative losses of \u00a3286m.<\/p>\n<p>The new American owners are clearly banking on something structural changing within football, as well as enhanced revenues at an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leedsunited.news\/news\/everything-we-know-about-leeds-uniteds-elland-road-redevelopment-new-capacity-completion-date-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expanded Elland Road<\/a>, to deliver a return on their investment.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, the numbers simply don\u2019t add up, especially as extra revenue in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leedsunited.news\/tag\/premier-league\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Premier League<\/a> is instantly swallowed up by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leedsunited.news\/news\/how-much-leeds-united-can-spend-this-summer-as-49ers-hit-with-61m-problem-after-promotion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">huge investment in the transfer market<\/a> needed to be competitive on the pitch.<\/p>\n<p>MORE LEEDS UNITED STORIES<\/p>\n<p>Even then, Leeds face an obstacle in the Premier League\u2019s restrictive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leedsunited.news\/news\/leeds-united-will-be-one-of-the-busiest-as-psr-rule-change-confirmed-30th-june-cut-off-key\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Can Leeds spend big this summer?<\/p>\n<p>Because they will have spent two of the last three seasons in the Championship, Leeds United\u2019s allowable loss for the three-year PSR assessment period up until the end of 2025-26 will be \u00a361m.<\/p>\n<p>Given that they lost almost that amount in 2023-24 alone, the margins look tight, even with allowable expenditure such as investment in infrastructure, the women\u2019s team and the academy deducted.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/PSR-infographic-LeedsUnitedNews-updated.png\" alt=\"Update infographic for Leeds United News showing how PSR works in the Premier League, UEFA competitions and Championship\" class=\"wp-image-67613\" \/>PSR infographic<\/p>\n<p>Credit: Adam Williams\/LeedsUnited.News\/GRV Media<\/p>\n<p>However, as University of Liverpool football finance lecturer Kieran Maguire has explained in exclusive conversation with <strong>LeedsUnited.News<\/strong>, there are levers they can pull to create more headroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeeds lost a lot of money in 2023-24 and one would expect substantial losses in 2024-25 as well, including promotion bonuses,\u201d said the Price of Football author. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, I think fans may have to taper expectations of a huge transfer investment over the next summer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving said that, the sales they have made have reduced the wage bill and brought in substantial player trading profits as well.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GettyImages-2212591734-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Pat Scaasi| MB Media\/Getty Images\" class=\"wp-image-87570\" \/>Photo by Pat Scaasi| MB Media\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Leeds, I think they will have to be smart rather than simply going big. Having said that, I think an investment of \u00a3100m is feasible given that contracts of new signings will be amortised over five years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStrengthening key positions therefore is what I would expect to see as the main strategy over the course of the summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If Leeds United are to stabilise in the Premier League once more, it will demand a sophisticated financial strategy.<\/p>\n<p>The club\u2019s ambitions to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leedsunited.news\/news\/leeds-united-left-with-gaping-100m-hole-after-announcing-recent-elland-road-expansion-plans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expand Elland Road to 53,000<\/a>, using the know-how 49ers have accrued during the construction of the Levi\u2019s Stadium in San Francisco, will be crucial in the long term.<\/p>\n<p>In the last 24 hours, the club have raised \u00a3120m via share issue \u2013 confirmed in official Companies House paperwork \u2013 which will be ringfenced for the stadium project, as well as the transfer budget.<\/p>\n<p>Leeds generated \u00a331m in matchday income last season, a club record and the biggest ever in the EFL. That liquidity could be crucial at a time when the 49ers are looking to expand Elland Road and execute the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leedsunited.news\/news\/when-leeds-uniteds-owners-the-49ers-will-complete-rangers-takeover-with-deal-at-90\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rangers takeover<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It may also be a sign of things to come.
