{"id":1171551,"date":"2026-08-27T02:56:31","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T02:56:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1171551\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T02:56:31","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T02:56:31","slug":"partial-lunar-eclipse-how-and-when-to-see-it-in-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1171551\/","title":{"rendered":"Partial lunar eclipse: How and when to see it in London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/newsletter_we_final_embed_desktop.png\" alt=\"WEST END FINAL\" width=\"175\" height=\"192\" class=\"sc-bIaHMm clJOzG\"\/><\/p>\n<p>At its peak, more than 90% of the Sun was obscured by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Moon<\/a>, the most it has been blocked in UK skies since the total eclipse in 1999. <\/p>\n<p>After that once-in-a-lifetime event, the lunar eclipse should be yet another exciting sight for stargazers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2290203085...jpeg\" width=\"5000\" height=\"3335\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"sc-dkPvMp YXmIZ\"\/><\/p>\n<p>People gather to view the partial solar eclipse in Greenwich Park on August 12<\/p>\n<p>Getty<\/p>\n<p>The astronomical event will see the Moon obscured by Earth\u2019s shadow, with around 93% of its visible diameter expected to be covered at the eclipse\u2019s peak, according to the Royal Museums Greenwich.<\/p>\n<p>Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming partial lunar eclipse.<\/p>\n<p>The eclipse will take place in the early hours of Friday August 28.<\/p>\n<p>The phenomenon will begin at around 3.33am in London, reaching its maximum at around 5.12am.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cmoonset\u201d will occur at around 6.15am, and the eclipse will end at 6.51am, after the Moon has already disappeared below London\u2019s horizon.<\/p>\n<p>At the eclipse\u2019s peak, the moon will appear a deep coppery red, in a phenomenon often referred to as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/blood-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blood moon<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This is caused by sunlight passing through Earth\u2019s atmosphere being scattered and reflected back towards the moon. <\/p>\n<p>Because the Moon will be hanging low above the south-western horizon during the eclipse, it could appear larger than usual against London\u2019s skyline.<\/p>\n<p>Will I need special glasses?<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the solar eclipse earlier this month, no special glasses will be needed this Friday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2290182882...jpeg\" width=\"6000\" height=\"4000\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"sc-dkPvMp YXmIZ\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A couple try out their solar eclipse glasses in Greenwich Park during the solar eclipse<\/p>\n<p>Getty<\/p>\n<p>People can look directly at the lunar eclipse without doing any damage to their eyes.<\/p>\n<p>It may be worth investing in binoculars or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/telescope\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">telescope<\/a>, however, to get the best look at the moon\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n<p>How do I have the best chance to see the eclipse?<\/p>\n<p>Astronomers recommend finding a high point with an obstructed view to the south-west to get the best view of the eclipse.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the major London parks that were full for the solar eclipse will be closed in the early hours of Friday morning &#8211; but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/hampstead-heath\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hampstead Heath<\/a> is open 24 hours, so you could get a good spot on Parliament Hill. <\/p>\n<p>Viewing conditions may be hampered by weather conditions however &#8211;
