Credits: ZME Science.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An olive tree growing in southern Portugal may have taken root around 1700 BCE \u2014 centuries before ancient Rome was founded and more than 1,300 years before Alexander the Great was born.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Known as the Oliveira do Peso, the tree grows at in Portugal\u2019s Alentejo region. Its age has been estimated at roughly 3,700 years, making it the oldest olive tree so far dated in Portugal. One published figure puts it at <a href=\"https:\/\/mobil.berliner-zeitung.de\/article\/wissen-portugal-olivenbaum-3700-jahre-10301769\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">3,712 years old<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That lack of precision is almost always the case with ancient trees. Scientists can\u2019t simply count thousands of annual rings inside an ancient olive tree. In fact, the very wood that would provide the best evidence of the tree\u2019s beginnings has often disappeared centuries ago. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But this isn\u2019t the only extraordinary olive tree in Portugal. For example, Oliveira do Mouch\u00e3o near Abrantes is estimated at 3,350 years old. Another tree in Santa Iria de Az\u00f3ia was put at around 2,850 years, while one in Monsaraz was estimated at 2,450 years. Scientists can also use radiocarbon dating to determine when particular pieces of wood formed. Ancient olive trees make both approaches difficult.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an olive tree grows older, parts of its central trunk can decay and disappear. Eventually, an enormous old tree may have a hollow centre, meaning the oldest wood\u2014the material that could provide the strongest evidence of its age\u2014is no longer there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Olive trees also do not always produce neat, easily readable annual growth rings. Their growth can be asymmetric, and changes in water availability can produce structures that resemble annual rings even when they aren\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>\u00d7<\/p>\n<p>                        Thank you! One more thing&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Please check your inbox and confirm your subscription.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/plant-science\/articles\/10.3389\/fpls.2017.01918\/full\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2017 study<\/a> demonstrated just how messy the problem can become. Researchers radiocarbon-dated multiple parts of a complete olive-tree cross-section and found that ring counts didn\u2019t consistently correspond with the radiocarbon dates. The oldest datable wood in that particular tree was less than 200 years old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, that doesn\u2019t mean the millennial olive trees are actually young. Rather, it shows that in very old olives, the original centre of the tree may have rotted away completely, leaving researchers without material from its earliest years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s another complication. Olive trees can produce new shoots and trunks, so simply treating a huge circumference as a clock can be misleading. So then, how do you determine the accurate age of a tree when its oldest surviving wood may be gone?<\/p>\n<p>Turning the trunk into a clock<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.zmescience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/22ab511906-6579-43c9-840c-e64066c670da.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-309962 perfmatters-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/22ab511906-6579-43c9-840c-e64066c670da-576x1024.jpg\"  data-\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beginning in 2007, UTAD researchers and Oliveiras Milenares developed a non-destructive method designed specifically for old, hollow trees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of requiring researchers to cut down the tree or reach its missing centre, the approach uses dendrometric measurements \u2014 characteristics such as the trunk\u2019s radius, diameter, height or circumference. For instance, they might <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2026\/08\/17\/portugal-is-home-to-hundreds-of-ancient-olive-trees-one-may-be-over-3700-years-old\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> measure its height and trunk<\/a> circumference or diameter, using measurements taken at different points on the trunk. This data is then plugged in a mathematical model relating those dimensions to age.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The basic idea is relatively simple. If scientists understand how the dimensions of olive trees relate to their age, they can use the size and shape of a living tree to estimate its age\u2014even when its centre is hollow, and the oldest wood cannot be examined.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is particularly useful for ancient olives. Researchers can measure a living tree from the outside rather than destroying it to reach whatever remains of its oldest wood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The method was patented and has since been applied to olive trees both in Portugal and abroad. If this estimate is correct, the tree began growing around 1700 BCE\u2014long before the Roman Empire existed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tree is about six metres tall, while its trunk has a circumference of roughly 10 metres. It is also not simply surviving as a hollow monument. The ancient tree continues to produce olives. According to the researchers, the ability to keep growing and fruiting may be one of the secrets behind the olive\u2019s extraordinary longevity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Olive trees have an unusual capacity for rejuvenation. An old section of trunk can die while other living portions remain capable of producing new shoots. In effect, the tree can replace parts of itself while the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/feature-post\/natural-sciences\/biology-reference\/plants-fungi\/pando-tree-largest-organism\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wider organism continues living<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA piece of trunk, how old it may be, has the ability to sprout again,\u201d Jos\u00e9 Lu\u00eds Louzada, a researcher at UTAD, <a href=\"https:\/\/rr.pt\/noticia\/vida\/2018\/10\/13\/sabe-quantos-anos-tem-a-oliveira-mais-velha-do-pais\/127369\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> in an interview.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This kind of extraordinary biological endurance has parallels elsewhere in nature, where some species have survived for millions of years with remarkably little change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its Mediterranean adaptations also help. Olive trees are well suited to hot, dry conditions and can reduce their activity during periods of severe heat and low humidity. Their slow growth and ability to survive difficult conditions can allow them to persist through enormous spans of time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moreover, ancient plants can retain surprising abilities to reproduce and adapt when environmental conditions change, as seen in plants that have survived for millions of years.<\/p>\n<p>So is the tree really 3,712 years old?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Possibly \u2014 but \u201cabout 3,700 years old\u201d is a better description of what scientists actually know.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The age is an estimate produced using a mathematical dating method. It is not the result of researchers counting 3,712 annual rings, nor has a continuous piece of wood survived from the tree\u2019s first years that can be directly radiocarbon-dated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UTAD method is valuable precisely because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/feature-post\/natural-sciences\/biology-reference\/plants-fungi\/old-oldest-tree\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ancient trees<\/a> can lose their oldest wood. But, like any model, its accuracy depends on the relationship between trunk dimensions and age established from the trees used to develop and validate it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means an extremely old age estimate should be treated as an estimate rather than as a perfectly precise measurement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether Oliveira do Peso is exactly 3,712 years old is therefore impossible to say with that level of certainty.
