{"id":1172573,"date":"2026-08-27T16:44:26","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T16:44:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1172573\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T16:44:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T16:44:26","slug":"burnham-i-will-take-hillsborough-approach-to-dealing-with-troubles-legacy-the-irish-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1172573\/","title":{"rendered":"Burnham: I will take \u2018Hillsborough approach\u2019 to dealing with Troubles legacy \u2013 The Irish News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he will take the same approach to getting answers for Troubles victims as he did for families affected by the Hillsborough tragedy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Speaking in Belfast, Mr Burnham said the Labour Government\u2019s Northern Ireland Troubles Bill would be brought back to Parliament in the autumn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Last year, the UK Government, then led by Sir Keir Starmer, made several commitments as part of a joint framework with the Irish Government on dealing with the legacy of the Troubles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">This included major reforms of a body tasked with investigating unsolved Troubles murders, the Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery (ICRIR).<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/highest-paid-director-of-northern-ireland-health-board-sees-pay-go-up-by-40000-QFNCIBKSKJFW5DVI3QEB4GPKJU\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Highest paid director of Northern Ireland health board sees pay go up by &#xA3;40,000\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787849065_980_XLWLTSXC55AEBCGVL4WE4EWHRE.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/former-mid-and-east-antrim-council-chief-anne-donaghy-convicted-of-two-charges-over-foi-email-deletion-XGXCV4AVC5FGNLNY4HDT65Z2B4\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Former Mid and East Antrim Council chief Anne Donaghy convicted of two charges over FoI email deletion\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787849066_644_ZL5JXOBY2BGA3CQWO2BJF452YA.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Labour Government\u2019s legislation is aiming to replace the controversial Legacy Act brought in by the previous Conservative government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Former Northern Ireland secretary Hilary Benn committed to adding amendments to the Bill to protect military veterans, including measures such as no repeated investigations, a requirement to consider the age and welfare of veterans, and that any veteran can give evidence remotely and anonymously.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Speaking about the Bill, Mr Burnham said: \u201cIt will be brought back in the autumn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWhy are we doing that?
