{"id":1173596,"date":"2026-08-28T05:07:38","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T05:07:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1173596\/"},"modified":"2026-08-28T05:07:38","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T05:07:38","slug":"james-duckworth-reaches-winston-salem-quarterfinals-rinky-hijikata-out-in-round-of-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1173596\/","title":{"rendered":"James Duckworth reaches Winston-Salem quarterfinals, Rinky Hijikata out in round of 16"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It was a case of third time lucky for James Duckworth as the Australian romped into the quarterfinals of the Winston-Salem Open with a stirring victory over Lorenzo Sonego.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Italian has proved to be a bit of a nemesis on Tour for the Sydneysider, who had gone down twice in their previous meetings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Sonego first triumphed over Duckworth in 2021 at Wimbledon when he won 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 in the third round.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Then came the defeat also on grass at Eastbourne International in the round of 32 in 2022 when Duckworth lost 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (1).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">So the 7-5, 6-3 victory on Thursday (AEST) in the ATP-250 event would have been coupled with sweet revenge and a tinge of relief ahead of next week&#8217;s US Open at Flushing Meadows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">With his world ranking of 79, Duckworth has qualified directly into the main draw for the last grand slam of the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The 34-year-old needed one hour and 44 minutes to dispatch Sonego, breaking serve twice in the match and fending off all three break point opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Duckworth will now meet 15th seed Fabian Marozsan of Hungary, who beat American wildcard Martin Damm 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, for a place in the semifinals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Earlier, Rinky Hijikata&#8217;s bid to make the last eight came to a crashing halt when the Australian was defeated by Benjamin Bonzi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It was a bullseye performance from the Frenchman, who didn&#8217;t miss much in a 6-1, 6-1 demolition that lasted just 57 minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Bonzi won 96 per cent of points on first serve and converted five of seven break point opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In other results, top British player and number four seed Arthur Fery made light work of qualifier Mees Rottgering to progress with a 6-3, 6-3 win.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the tournament is over for number seven seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, who was beaten 6-3, 7-6 (1) by American Aleksander Kovacevic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\"><strong>AAP<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It was a case of third time lucky for James Duckworth as the Australian romped into the quarterfinals&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":1173597,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":"","_share_on_mastodon":"0"},"categories":[4105],"tags":[232651,71635,93,79,1068,16,15,101598],"class_list":["post-1173596","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tennis","tag-james-duckworth","tag-rinky-hijikata","tag-sport","tag-sports","tag-tennis","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-winston-salem"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/117171404468962977","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1173596","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1173596"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1173596\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/1173597"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1173596"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1173596"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1173596"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
