Norway<\/a>‘s King Harald V, who lived in exile in the United States as a child during the Nazi occupation of his country and rejected a series of European noblewomen to marry his school sweetheart, has died at the age of 89<\/a>.<\/p>\n An announcement from the royal palace confirmed that he died at Oslo<\/a>‘s National Hospital on Friday at 6.35am.<\/p>\n Harald was the oldest monarch in Europe. While the popular king modernised the royal household, he chose not to imitate other elderly sovereigns who have abdicated in recent times. <\/p>\n His son now automatically ascends to the throne as King Haakon VIII.<\/p>\n In line with other European royal families, Norway’s monarchs fulfil a predominantly symbolic role, retaining widespread celebrity while actual governing authority in the nation of 5.5 million rests with an elected parliament. <\/p>\n Harald was crowned king following the death of his British-born father, King Olav V, in January 1991, ruling over a period of economic growth propelled by oil and gas.<\/p>\n Born in 1937 in Asker, near Oslo, Harald became the first Norwegian prince born on domestic soil since King Olav IV in 1370. <\/p>\n Across the subsequent centuries, Norway lacked a monarch of its own until Harald\u2019s grandfather, Haakon VII, was elected king when the union between Sweden and Norway dissolved in 1905.<\/p>\n Harald was just three years old when Nazi forces occupied Norway at the outbreak of World War II. <\/p>\n Escaping capture, his mother fled with him and his sisters, Ragnhild and Astrid, travelling first to Sweden and then by sea to the US, while his father and grandfather established a government-in-exile in Britain.<\/p>\n Haakon\u2019s insistence on defying German demands earned lasting respect across the nation.<\/p>\n Throughout their stay in the US, members of the Norwegian royal family<\/a> were frequent guests at the White House. Harald was six when he completed his initial official duty, christening new aircraft at a Norwegian air base in Canada.<\/p>\n The family came back together in Norway in June 1945, shortly after hostilities ended. Harald received his education at state schools, the Norwegian military college and Oxford University<\/a>.<\/p>\n Harald was deeply devoted to the sea and sailing, like his father, who won gold as an Olympic sailor in 1928. He competed for Norway in several Olympic Games, and skippered his yacht to a World Championship gold in 1987.<\/p>\n In his younger years, Harald faced pressure to choose a bride from among Europe’s princesses. Over nine years he turned away a succession of noblewomen, holding firm until securing his father’s consent to marry his school sweetheart, Sonja Haraldsen, whose father was a successful businessman.<\/p>\n King Olav originally concerned himself that the union might undermine the nation’s young monarchy<\/a>. Instead, the Norwegian public greeted the August 1968 wedding with jubilation, warmly embracing Sonja as their queen. The couple had two children, Haakon and his elder sister, M\u00e4rtha Louise.<\/p>\n In 1990, the Norwegian Constitution was revised to permit the eldest child, regardless of gender, priority in the line of succession. Because it was not enforced retroactively, Haakon maintained his position ahead of his sister.<\/p>\n Upon taking the throne on 21 January 1991, Harald chose the motto previously used by his father and grandfather: “All for Norway.” He spent his remaining years working to modernise the monarchy.<\/p>\n \u201cIt has been my experience that the monarchy stands strong,\u201d he once said. \u201cThis is not least because my father and grandfather did most things right. That puts me under pressure, but I take it as a challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n Harald won the praise of the country with an emotional speech at a memorial service after a right-wing extremist, Anders Behring Breivik, killed 77 people in bomb and gun attacks in Norway in 2011.<\/p>\n \u201cI remain convinced that the belief in freedom is stronger than fear. I remain convinced in the belief of an open Norwegian democracy and society. I remain convinced in the belief in our ability to live freely and safely in our own country,” the king said.<\/p>\n In 2016, Harald gave an unexpected and impassioned speech in support of LGBTQ+ equality, refugees and religious tolerance, saying: \u201cNorwegians are girls who love girls, boys who love boys, and girls and boys who love each other.\u201d <\/p>\n He added that many Norwegians have emigrated from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Poland and other countries and that they \u201cbelieve in God, Allah, the universe and nothing\u201d.<\/p>\n The public speech extolled the diversity of the Scandinavian nation and was viewed on social media by millions.<\/p>\n During his reign, the royal family suffered relatively few of the scandals that have plagued their peers in the Swedish and British<\/a> royal families. <\/p>\n However, Harald’s daughter M\u00e4rtha Louise gave up royal duties after raising eyebrows by saying she could communicate with angels and becoming engaged to an American man who identifies as a shaman.<\/p>\n The Norwegian royal family did face unflattering attention in early 2026 as Harald\u2019s daughter-in-law, Crown Princess Mette-Marit<\/a>, faced renewed scrutiny over her connections with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. That raised questions over her judgment, though she is not accused of any wrongdoing. <\/p>\n Mette-Marit apologised for the situation<\/a> she put the royal family in, part of a broader apology for all those she had \u201cdisappointed\u201d.<\/p>\n At around the same time, her eldest son, Marius Borg H\u00f8iby, was convicted of rape in a high-profile trial and sentenced to four years in prison<\/a>.
