{"id":1174540,"date":"2026-08-28T17:44:25","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T17:44:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1174540\/"},"modified":"2026-08-28T17:44:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T17:44:25","slug":"spain-to-get-worlds-first-wooden-wind-turbine-factory-as-fiberglass-waste-piles-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1174540\/","title":{"rendered":"Spain to get world&#8217;s first wooden wind turbine factory as fiberglass waste piles up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\" width=\"1920\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/wooden-wind-turbine-blades-Spainimage-rec31XdfqQjmtzZlW-1.jpg\" class=\"wp-post-image featured-image\" alt=\"A robot carving wood.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Photo Credit: Voodin Blade Technology<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voodin Blade Technology plans to build a facility in Spain to mass-produce wind turbine blades made from wood, creating what would be a first-of-its-kind clean energy factory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the project works as planned, it could help the rapidly expanding wind industry tackle one of its biggest waste challenges while making renewable power cleaner from start to finish.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what to know<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Announced in 2026 with operations expected to begin in 2031, the VB1F project is being developed in Navarra, Spain, by German startup Voodin Blade Technology and its European partners with an investment of more than \u20ac100 million \u2014 about $115 million, <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/innovation\/worlds-first-wooden-blade-factory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to Interesting Engineering<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of relying on conventional blades built from fiberglass composites and epoxy resin that are notoriously hard to break down, the project would use wood-based materials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Installed wind capacity worldwide has already climbed past 1,000 gigawatts. To stay on track with climate goals, that total will need to exceed 3,000 GW by 2030.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Building out that much wind power creates a huge demand for manufacturing. With each megawatt requiring roughly 11 tons (10 metric tons) of turbine blade material, the industry needs vast numbers of parts that are durable, affordable, and preferably <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecooldown.com\/green-tech\/3d-printing-wind-turbines-virginia-tech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">easier to recycle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More background<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wind energy has become one of the most important tools for reducing the pollution driving rising global temperatures. Expanding it can also help cut harmful air pollution derived from burning fossil fuels like coal and oil, benefiting public health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biggest concern, however, centers on the end of life for old turbine blades. Traditional blades are made from fiberglass composites, and roughly 78% of them end up in landfills or are burned once they&#8217;re retired. By 2050, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecooldown.com\/green-tech\/recyclable-wind-turbine-blades-pecan-resin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wind turbine blade waste<\/a> may reach 47.4 million tons \u2014 43 million metric tons \u2014 creating a major disposal challenge for an industry built around cleaner electricity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A viable alternative could also provide cost benefits over time. If manufacturers are able to produce blades from materials that are easier to manage at the end of their lives, developers and communities may face lower disposal costs and fewer waste management burdens as more wind farms reach retirement.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s being done?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navarra factory is one concrete attempt to address the problem before it grows much larger. By designing blades around wood-based materials, Voodin Blade Technology is betting that renewable infrastructure can be built in a way that is more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecooldown.com\/green-tech\/circular-economy-return-to-cycle-humans-disrupted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">circular<\/a> and less wasteful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the company succeeds in scaling production, the effects could extend well beyond Spain.
