If the night is disappearing, party by day<\/p>\n

This explosion of daytime partying might seem at odds with the increasingly common narrative around the \u201cdeath of club culture<\/a>\u201d in London. The statistics certainly make for grim reading, with Mixmag<\/a> reporting that a predicted 57 per cent of London\u2019s pubs and clubs could close by 2030.<\/p>\n

So what\u2019s behind the downturn in late-night venues? \u201cIt\u2019s less about law and more an accumulation of challenges that have made operating late at night in London<\/a> increasingly difficult,\u201d says Luke Huxham, managing director of Broadwick Live. \u201cSince Covid, the industry has faced rising operating costs, inconsistent licensing frameworks and planning decisions that allow residential development next to venues that were there first.\u201d<\/p>\n

In some ways, the rise of day parties feels like a direct response. If it\u2019s becoming harder to party all night, why not dance all day? \u201cPartly it\u2019s the industry adapting to how hard it\u2019s become to operate late at night in London,\u201d Luke agrees. \u201cBut partly it\u2019s a shift in how people want to socialise, drinking less, craving new experiences and still wanting to dance even if late nights don\u2019t fit their lives anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a shift I\u2019ve noticed in myself and my peers, too. While Millennials might occasionally roll their eyes at Gen Z\u2019s obsession with health and wellbeing<\/a>, there\u2019s something increasingly appealing about a party that doesn\u2019t require sacrificing an entire weekend to recover from. DJ Moxie has been at the forefront of both London\u2019s late-night and day party culture and recognises this wellbeing shift: \u201cNightlife and club culture bring so much to our city, but it\u2019s not for everyone\u201d, she says, \u201cI think having the option to dance and still have a relatively early night is attractive for a lot of people.\u201d It represents a significant departure from the all-nighters and unapologetic hedonism so deeply entwined with the history of clubbing and festival culture. But perhaps that\u2019s exactly the point \u2013 London\u2019s party culture isn\u2019t disappearing, it\u2019s just changing shape.<\/p>\n
