Indian Ocean temperatures can influence rainfall and other climate conditions across densely populated parts of Africa, Asia, and Australia. <\/p>\n<p>Relatively stable relationships between tropical oceans can also help scientists predict climate conditions from seasons to years ahead.<\/p>\n<p>But one important part of that relationship is behaving very differently.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41467-026-76705-y\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new study<\/a> published in Nature Communications has found that a long-standing connection between Pacific atmospheric circulation and temperatures across the tropical Indian Ocean has broken down dramatically in recent decades. <\/p>\n<p>Looking back through centuries of climate history, the researchers found that the modern shift appears exceptional.<\/p>\n<p>An important player is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/coral-records-show-that-brutal-el-ninos-haven-t-always-been-this-way\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pacific Walker circulation<\/a>, a vast system of moving air above the tropical Pacific.<\/p>\n<p>The basic idea is simple. Differences in ocean temperatures help move air across the Pacific. Warm air rises over warmer waters, travels through the atmosphere, sinks elsewhere, and helps drive winds near the surface.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1788005775_518_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>During events such as El Ni\u00f1o, this circulation can weaken. Through an atmospheric bridge, those changes can also influence temperatures across the Indian Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, when the Pacific system changed, the Indian Ocean&#8217;s basin-wide temperature pattern \u2013 known as the Indian Ocean Basin Mode \u2013 tended to change with it.<\/p>\n<p>But since the 1950s, the tropical Indian Ocean has warmed by about\u00a00.1 degrees Celsius per decade, driven by changes associated with rising greenhouse gas concentrations. Meanwhile, the Pacific Walker circulation has strengthened since the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>The result is striking: the sign of the relationship between the two has reversed in recent decades.<\/p>\n<p>In simple terms, one important part of the Indian Ocean climate system is no longer following the Pacific&#8217;s lead as reliably as it once did.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1014\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-2247430533-1014x675.jpg\" alt=\"Global Warming Is Breaking The Link Between Two Major Oceans\" class=\"wp-image-216446\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>3D Render of a Topographic Map of the Indian Ocean. (FrankRamspott\/E+\/Getty Images) <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A key finding is that global warming and human emissions are now overwhelming the Pacific&#8217;s natural influence on the Indian Ocean,&#8221; climate scientist Caroline Ummenhofer of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whoi.edu\/press-room\/news-release\/volcanicoceans\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But modern ocean measurements only stretch back about a century. So how could researchers tell whether this was truly unusual rather than something the climate system had done naturally before?<\/p>\n<p>Lead author Shawn Wang, now at the University of Colorado Boulder, and colleagues combined modern observations and climate models with natural climate archives:\u00a035 coral records, three tree-ring records, and one stalagmite record.<\/p>\n<p>These natural archives preserve clues to past environmental conditions, allowing the team to reconstruct Indo-Pacific climate patterns from 1631 to 1990.<\/p>\n<p>For most of those four centuries, the Pacific and Indian Ocean systems largely moved together.<\/p>\n<p>Then came a striking exception.<\/p>\n<p>Between roughly 1810 and 1850, their relationship weakened considerably. That period coincided with several enormous tropical volcanic eruptions, including Indonesia&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/mount-tambora-eruption-1815-napoleon-defeat-battle-of-waterloo-electrostatic-levitation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mount Tambora eruption in 1815<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1788005777_118_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>Large eruptions can send sulfur-containing gases high into the atmosphere, where they form aerosols that reduce incoming sunlight and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/medieval-monks-could-have-unknowingly-recorded-the-ferocity-of-volcanic-activity\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">temporarily cool Earth&#8217;s surface<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Because that cooling isn&#8217;t uniform, it can alter ocean temperatures and winds. The simulations suggest these volcanic disturbances temporarily disrupted the usual connection between the Pacific and Indian Oceans.<\/p>\n<p>So this climate relationship has broken down before. But there&#8217;s a crucial difference.<\/p>\n<p>The 19th-century disruption was associated with powerful volcanic eruptions. Today&#8217;s shift is occurring alongside sustained human-caused warming.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers compared the modern 1945\u20132025 relationship with equivalent 80-year periods in simulations and reconstructions spanning the past millennium. The modern correlation fell outside the 95 percent ranges represented by both \u2013 even compared with periods of intense volcanic activity.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?int_promo=stargazing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"642\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/FOMO-1200x628-_Dont-miss-the-next-breakthrough_-cosmic-colourful-642x336.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" class=\"wp-image-201722\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That doesn&#8217;t mean every connection between the Pacific and Indian Oceans has collapsed. Another relationship involving the Indian Ocean Walker circulation did\u00a0not\u00a0undergo the same significant modern shift.<\/p>\n<p>But the change researchers did detect could matter far beyond the oceans.<\/p>\n<p>Stable interactions between tropical ocean basins are one source of climate predictability. If those relationships change, scientists may need to account for that when predicting future climate conditions. The simulations didn&#8217;t reproduce every detail of the 19th-century volcanic disruption, and exactly how the Pacific Walker circulation will change as warming continues remains unclear.<\/p>\n<p>The bigger message is that  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/climate-change\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73046\" data-postid=\"216317\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">climate change<\/a> doesn&#8217;t simply warm individual oceans.
