Nvidia\u2019s controversial new DLSS 5 filter, which caused a bit of a hullabaloo earlier this year<\/a>, has leaked online \u2013 and instantly been implemented into pretty much every major PS5 game on the market.<\/p>\n

While previous iterations of Nvidia\u2019s upscaling technology have broadly been praised \u2013 using reconstruction techniques to reduce computational load without impacting image quality \u2013 this version appears to use generative AI to alter artistic intent.<\/p>\n

This was best observed<\/a> with an example of Resident Evil Requiem\u2019s<\/a> Grace Ashcroft earlier in the year, with fans complaining the scaredy-cat heroine had been \u201cyassified\u201d.<\/p>\n

And now a version of the technology\u2019s files have been pulled from the PC version of NBA 2K27<\/a>, which has prompted fans to inject it into a variety of different titles \u2013 including many of Sony\u2019s biggest franchises, via their Steam ports.<\/p>\n

For example, MJ from Marvel\u2019s Spider-Man 2<\/a> looks transformed, with bright red lips and darker coloured eyes.<\/p>\n

While she\u2019s still recognisable, it strips away the artistic intent of the original model \u2013 regardless of whether you like Insomniac\u2019s take on the character or not.<\/p>\n

I personally don\u2019t think this Ellie example is the worst I\u2019ve seen, although she looks years and years older than she\u2019s supposed to and the lighting doesn\u2019t properly match the scene:<\/p>\n

And then we have this now infamous example of Cloud from Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth<\/a>, which borders on parody really:<\/p>\n

Nvidia, for the record, says critics are wrong about DLSS 5.<\/p>\n

CEO Jensen Huang defended the technology<\/a>, saying it \u201cdoesn’t change the artistic control\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cThis is very different than generative AI; it\u2019s content-control generative AI. That\u2019s why we call it neural rendering.\u201d<\/p>\n
