\n\tShailene Woodley<\/a> is reflecting on the time her \u201cdream\u201d role as Mary Jane Watson was cut from The Amazing Spider-Man 2<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation\u2019s Conversations recently, Woodley shared her reaction to learning that her scenes with Andrew Garfield, who starred as Peter Parker\/Spider-Man, had been cut from the final film. The actress said she didn\u2019t find out until about a year after she had finished filming the scenes for the Sony<\/a> Pictures movie, which was released in theaters in May 2014.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThat was a fun phone call,\u201d she joked.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was cast as Mary Jane for Spider-Man, which was my dream. Oh my god, Spider-Man\u2019s my favorite superhero; Mary Jane was my favorite character growing up. So, when I got it, I was like, \u2018This is so exciting!’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Big Little Lies star continued, \u201cWe filmed like three scenes together, me and Andrew Garfield. And then, like a year later, they were like, \u2018So, you\u2019re not in the movie anymore.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018What? What do you mean?\u2019 And they\u2019re like, \u2018We\u2019ve introduced a lot of new characters in this last one, and we\u2019re going to wait for whatever happens between [Emma Stone] and Andrew [Garfield].’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWoodley said she was told the filmmakers planned to introduce Mary Jane after Peter\u2019s relationship with Gwen Stacy, played by Stone, came to an end.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey were like, \u2018Let\u2019s wait for her to die, and then we\u2019ll introduce Mary Jane.\u2019 Which made sense, but then they didn\u2019t make that film. So, there was no reintroduction,\u201d Woodley said. \u201cThat\u2019s what I was told, but again, who knows what the truth is? I could have been terrible, and they were like, \u2018We can\u2019t do this.’\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Hollywood Reporter reported in 2013 that Woodley\u2019s scenes<\/a> had been cut from the film. At the time, director Marc Webb<\/a> said the decision was made to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen\u2019s relationship.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cShailene is an incredibly talented actress, and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her,\u201d Webb said.<\/p>\n

\n\tMary Jane had previously been established as Peter Parker\u2019s main love interest in Sam Raimi\u2019s original Spider-Man trilogy, with Kirsten Dunst playing the character opposite Tobey Maguire. Garfield\u2019s iteration of the franchise instead centered on Peter\u2019s relationship with Gwen Stacy, played by Stone. Bryce Dallas Howard also appeared as Gwen in 2007\u2019s Spider-Man 3.<\/p>\n

\n\tSony ultimately shelved plans for a third Amazing Spider-Man movie following the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which underperformed compared with expectations. Garfield, meanwhile, eventually returned as Spider-Man alongside Maguire in 2021\u2019s Spider-Man: No Way Home.<\/p>\n
