racing: Bev Kelso hears of stable favourite’s latest award before sad passing

“Legarto would have been the best of them though, just ahead of Levante,” Kelso said.

It was Legarto who provided Bev with a reason to smile on Friday, after she had been hospitalised since Tuesday.

The recently-retired multiple Group 1 winner was named the Matamata Horse of the Year at that region’s annual awards on Thursday night and Ken took the winner’s plaque to the hospital to show Bev on Friday.

“When I told her she had won and showed her the plaque, Bev opened her eyes, smiled and said ‘Legarto’,” he said.

He confirmed their wonderful sprinting mare Alabama Lass will still take her place in Saturday’s $400,000 Proisir Plate at Ellerslie.

“Bev would have wanted that and me to go on training.”

A celebration of Bev’s life will be held at the Matamata racecourse on September 14 at 1pm.

Proisir Plate takes shape

The field for the first Group 1 of the season is all but set with Affirmative Action set to come out of the Proisir Plate at Ellerslie on Saturday.

Trainer Pam Gerard says last season’s 2000 Guineas runner-up is almost certain not to start as he gains so little advantage from the weight-for-age scale early in the season.

So while he has come through a slashing first-up run in the Foxbridge Plate well, the 4-year-old will look for other options.

“It sounds mad to say you don’t want to start when he is eligible for a $500,000 bonus but I just don’t think he can win it,” Gerard said.

“These 4-year-old boys just get no help in the spring with the weight-for-age scale.

“He would only be having his second start in open grade and be giving weight to a really good mare like Alabama Lass who has been Group 1 placed in Australia.

“So we are likely to withdraw him from the Proisir and maybe stick to sprinting for a while.

“Longer-term, his aims might be races like the Telegraph but ultimately the BCD Sprint at Te Rapa.”

If and when Affirmative Action comes out that would leave 16 horses entered for the Proisir Plate, meaning they would all get a start.

That would end a nervous few days for trainer Stephen Marsh, as Tardelli sits officially 17th in the order of entry but now looks certain to gain a start, giving Marsh three in the race.

The trainers of almost all the other Proisir Plate entries have confirmed their intention to start on Saturday, with one or two boxes still to be ticked but if all please their trainers over the next few days, there should be a stacked field for the first Group 1 of the season.

Well Written, who looked very forward in her Ellerslie trackwork on Thursday, is into $1.80 odds for TAB futures for the Proisir, ahead of Alabama Lass and First Five at $6.

The 1400m weight-for-age race will be run at 4.34pm on Saturday, with Ellerslie’s last race just after 5pm, minutes after the New Zealand Warriors start their final regular-season match of the season against the Manly Sea Eagles a few kilometres away in Penrose.

“We realise we have a lot of racing fans who will be intently interested in the Warriors game so we will have the bar open so people can stay on to watch it here and also keep an eye on the Australian races after out last race,” Auckland Thoroughbred Racing chief executive Paul Wilcox said.

<p class="TpGGueVENmajZwYgWe"
