Joseph O’Brien is fast becoming one of the shrewdest handlers on the globe, and getting this beautifully bred son of Wootton Bassett into a handicap off a mark of just 60 must have taken a great deal of skill – unless the bay gelding is quite simply rather moderate. I would like to think it’s the former, and if you look at his second qualifying race at Tramore, you would strongly suspect that reasoning applies here.

Running just eight days after his final qualifying run down at a mile at Leopardstown, where he had as much chance as I do of becoming the next Prime Minister, the betting may well tell us plenty about his prospects here.

A positive move should be greeted with a handy saver investment. But as my dad used to say, money in the bank is sometimes worth more than a plan over the next five years, which you may not follow through, so the nod goes to OPPENHEIMER.

Trained by Kev Coleman, this son of Starman looked nothing better than ordinary on his first three starts as a juvenile before shaping nicely on his first comeback run of the season over six furlongs at the Curragh. Subsequently gelded, he again shaped with distinct promise over six and then seven furlongs when hardly given the office by Chris Hayes or Colin Keane.

The combination of being dropped from 65 down to his current rating of 59, which is allied to a step up to a mile, may well see him go close to opening his account at the seventh time of asking. The cream on the cake is a further 7lbs being taken off his back by young Conor Cusack.

        15:20 Beverley – Hot Cash

My final three ‘value plays’ are all at the pear-shaped track, and that could be an almighty mistake – or not, as the case may be – as it is the first UK course this weekend to declare genuinely soft ground. As punters and pundits alike, we tend to overreact to the end of summer/beginning of autumn ground changes, and when you delve deep enough into the form, you can find there are still plenty of horses in training that handle all types of surfaces.

This mid grade, class four extended mile event looks a tough call, but these are the races where ‘value’ can be found. Count Palatine comes off a gutsy success at Carlisle when he just got the better of Son, and a 3lbs higher mark should not prove too hard to handle. The problem is that there are plenty of well-treated runners all around him in the handicap, and most of those have been waiting for the ground conditions to change.

Yes, I know I did emphasise that it is not the be-all and end-all of finding winners at this time of the year, but it could be a major play here along with the view that there should be plenty of pace on, so this should be a proper test at the trip as they climb the Yorkshire Eiger. Both Tele Red and The Sweet Escape come here in cracking form and have obvious claims, but less so the Jack Channon-trained runner, with a horrible sit in stall 11 and without a win in 14 months on his CV.

He has, however, run two solid races recently, at Thirsk and Epsom off 80 and 78. There was no jar in the ground at either race, so with the ground more in his favour this afternoon, 83 may still see HOT CASH make his mark. A winner off 85 on soft ground last June at Carlisle, the son of Too Darn Hot is suited by racing in midfield off a fast pace and picking off his rivals one by one on the climb to the finish. In turn, this looks like a very suitable opportunity for him, with Connor Beasley up top for the first time.

I thought that this was the most interesting race of the day from a punting point of view, with value all over the shop in this 15-runner field. But as we all know, when it comes to five-furlong races here, luck in the run is another vital factor that is hard to integrate into your final picks.

Tiriac is just about as frustrating a horse as you can find at this low speedster’s level, but the six-year-old is beautifully treated off a mark of 69 if putting his best hoof forward. The main problem, though, is that he is best ridden cold, off the pace, in the hope that the speed breaks down late on and that he can subsequently find the gaps and land the gold medal.

Running well from off the pace on Newcastle’s Tapeta surface, while scoring two wins off 68 and 72, gives us more than a whiff of hope here. His two- and three-quarter-length sixth of 11 behind Little Mi MI at Hamilton is another plus factor when he had a far from clear passage from two out.

Paul Midgley’s charge is a plausible player, but so is the oldest horse in the field, VENTURA EXPRESS. Rated as high as 82 this time last year, it is no surprise to see that he is on the downgrade at his age.

Yet there is strong evidence that he retains enough ability to win off 70, having run well on an unfavoured fast surface in his last two starts. This stiffer track should also play to the veteran’s strengths, and although – like Tiriac – he needs the Red Sea to open late doors, he could prove better value than his hold-up rival if those gaps come.

There is more of a prod in the dark to be taken in nurseries here, as the majority of runners – especially during this recent dry spell – will not have experienced ground anywhere near as testing as this.

I was at the track on my recent tour of Yorkshire when I saw COURT LEGEND make his nursery debut 15 days ago, and I was impressed by what I saw both in the parade ring and on the track itself. On his three previous runs, all over six furlongs, the son of Inns of Court had really only shown some promise once on fast ground at Thirsk – a track which has no bearing at all on this one.

Upped a furlong and a half here, the selection was very weak in the market, drifting from 11/2 to 8/1, but showed considerable promise under a very patient ride from Billy Garritty.

Anchored at the back of the pack off a steady gallop, as eventual winner State of Gold had an uncontested lead up top, the bay gelding had absolutely no idea what to do when he came off the bridle. For bad measure, he kept being buffeted by Amantha from the bottom bend to two out. However, once he found his stride and understood what was required, he fairly rattled home up the hill.

I actually think he was lucky just to be raised 1lb for that run and there is hope in his breeding on both sides that the ground won’t prove a problem, while the deeper test overall should be perfect for him.

            Paul Jacobs’ Racing Tips

14:25 Cork – Oppenheimer
15:20 Beverley – Hot Cash
15:55 Beverley – Ventura Express
16:30 Beverley – Court Legend

*All prices are bang up to date with our snazzy widgets, while odds in copy are accurate at the time of publishing but subject to change. All of today’s latest horse racing results and odds are over on PP.com.

Read MoreAll today’s latest horse racing results and odds are over on PP.comThe Paddy Power Guide To Safer Gambling – Everything You Need To Know

Paul Jacobs’ Racing Tips 14:25 Cork – Oppenheimer15:20 Beverley – Hot Cash15:55 Beverley – Ventura Express16:30 Beverley –…

[4107
288,1071,79,16,15
post-1177319","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-racing","tag-horse-racing","tag-racing","tag-sports","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom
["GET
