Heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast for large swathes of the UK, with warnings that the weather<\/a> could cause flooding and disrupt travel and outdoor events over the bank holiday weekend<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, the Met Office issued multiple yellow weather warnings<\/a> for thunderstorms covering all of Wales, the majority of England and Northern Ireland, and Scotland as far north as Pitlochry.<\/p>\n

The weather advisories, which caution that heavy showers<\/a>, thunderstorms and possible hail could cause disruption to transport, infrastructure and outdoor activities, are active into Sunday evening.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, additional alerts for \u201cpossible flooding\u201d were put in place for various parts of the UK, stretching from Scotland to southwest England.<\/p>\n

Where are weather warnings and flood alerts in place?<\/p>\n

The Environment Agency<\/a>, which issues flood warnings and alerts for England, said the locations most affected by heavy rainfall will be low-lying land and roads near rivers, where rising water levels may lead to flash flooding<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Six places in England were covered by flood alerts<\/a> as of Sunday lunchtime, near Rotherham, Kidderminster and in various parts of Cornwall close to the coast. Residents have been warned that high tide will vary along the coastline and to avoid coastal car parks, which could be impacted by flash flooding.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, 10 flood alerts<\/a> were issued by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) in Edinburgh and various parts of Central and West Central Scotland as well as the borders.<\/p>\n

Heavy and thundery showers that have rumbled on in recent days<\/a> were expected to develop throughout Sunday afternoon into the evening, with the Met Office weather warnings<\/a> advising that much of the UK could be impacted.<\/p>\n

Met Office meteorologist Honor Criswick warned that while scattered showers would mainly affect Scotland throughout Sunday morning, the rain would spread south into England where \u201c[in the] early afternoon we could see showers potentially turn quite heavy and thundery\u201d.<\/p>\n

Greg Dewhurst, senior meteorologist at the Met Office, told The i Paper: \u201cOn Sunday, there will be sunshine and heavy showers with a risk of thunderstorms and hail. This will be most frequent across the north and northwest.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cThis weather will impact driving speeds along the road and cause unexpected accidents so take extra care when travelling.\u201d<\/p>\n

Particular warnings have been made to cities, where heavy rainfall could lead to localised flooding of travel disruptions, roads and properties.<\/p>\n

The Environment Agency urged people to avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water. It also asked individuals to avoid beaches and coastal promenades, which stand a greater risk of flooding.<\/p>\n

Which August bank holiday weekend events could be disrupted?<\/p>\n

Tens of thousands are attending Reading and Leeds Festival this weekend, with music lovers already braving the mud and rain amid the weather warnings.<\/p>\n

In London, the Notting Hill Carnival<\/a> takes places this weekend. It is expected that two million people will attend as the event marks its 60th anniversary<\/p>\n

On its official website, the organisers have advised the crowd to consider \u201cwaterproof coats and shoes\u201d.<\/p>\n

Typically, rain showers have not dampened Europe\u2019s largest street festival<\/a> as rainstorms in 2015 and 2018 saw the carnival proceed as planned.<\/p>\n

Will the weather improve by bank holiday Monday?<\/p>\n

The weather is set to be warmer in England and Wales by Monday, with temperatures reaching the low 20\u00b0Cs before further rain moves in from the west and particularly impacts Scotland.<\/p>\n

Stronger winds are expected across southern parts of the UK, with temperatures ranging from 16\u00b0C to 23\u00b0C.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will be quite dry first thing on Monday,\u201d Criswick said. \u201cFor many areas it\u2019s going to be turning drier and brighter, a better end to the day compared to the start.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOn Monday, showers will become less heavy and frequent, other than east Scotland which will remain wet,\u201d Dewhurst added.<\/p>\n

The Met Office warned that \u201cit\u2019s still worth taking a waterproof if you\u2019re at a festival\u201d.<\/p>\n

The wetter weather comes after five widespread heat waves<\/a> so far in 2026, coinciding with extremely dry conditions<\/a> which have led to the ground becoming harder, drier and therefore unable to soak in heavy rain as quickly \u2013 leading to increased flood risks<\/a>.<\/p>\n
