{"id":1178689,"date":"2026-08-31T08:23:25","date_gmt":"2026-08-31T08:23:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1178689\/"},"modified":"2026-08-31T08:23:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-31T08:23:25","slug":"large-saltwater-crocodile-that-closed-broomes-cable-beach-captured-and-relocated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1178689\/","title":{"rendered":"Large saltwater crocodile that closed Broome&#8217;s Cable Beach captured and relocated"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A large saltwater crocodile that sparked periodic beach closures around Broome in recent weeks has been captured and relocated by authorities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The 3.5-metre-long estuarine crocodile had been sighted in waters around the tourist town, about 2,000 kilometres north of Perth in WA&#8217;s Kimberley, multiple times in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But a sighting on Saturday, just north of Cable Beach and about 100 metres offshore, saw Yawuru and Parks and Wildlife rangers decide capture and relocation was the safest possible option.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">This resulted in another beach closure, the third in recent weeks, as rangers began the &#8220;inherently risky&#8221; process of wrangling the reptile.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Parks and Wildlife district officer Lyle Gilbert said the reptile, relatively large by Kimberley standards, was well within Broome&#8217;s crocodile control zone, an area of ocean around the town where the animals were monitored and removed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The crocodiles we capture and relocate are ones occurring in the croc risk management area \u2026 where they&#8217;re going to potentially run into people,&#8221; Mr Gilbert said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And if they&#8217;re causing problems, if they&#8217;re threatening vessels or showing signs they could potentially attack people, we&#8217;ll relocate them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A captured crocodile.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/3f6da1b4c9c2b27b02a2a9045690a5cf.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The crocodile was seen 100 metres offshore. (Supplied: Poppy Youdale)<\/p>\n<p>How do you capture a crocodile?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Gilbert said It took four rangers to capture the animal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[We] attach to the crocodile by either a grapple or a harpoon, which basically just sticks into the skin, which holds the animal in place,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;Then it&#8217;s a matter of actually securing its jaws to reduce the risk to people and cover its eyes.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Gilbert stressed the importance of managing the risks to both the people involved and the crocodile to ensure the process ran smoothly and safely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said people must remain vigilant and aware in &#8220;crocodile country&#8221;. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rare occurrence\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Beach Hut Broome owner Angela Roberson was at Cable Beach on the weekend when the capture occurred.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A crocodile warning sign on a beach. (ABC Kimberley: Ruby Littler)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She said there was lots of interest from locals and tourists, with people lining the stairs and looking out from the surf club to try to catch a glimpse.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;I have seen crocodiles, but not of that size and not right here in front of our business,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It does happen, but not too regularly; I think this one was a bit misplaced.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Roberson, whose business rents sun chairs and beach equipment to beachgoers, said she was grateful to those involved with safely capturing the crocodile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They managed to capture it within an hour and a half, which is amazing.
