The award was conferred upon her for her consistent advocacy of the European idea and her defense of freedom in the face of Russian imperialism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The award ceremony will take place on September 13, 2026, in the F\u00fcrstensaal (Princes\u2019 Hall) of the Fulda City Palace. The award jury substantiated its decision as follows:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn her works, Nino Haratischwili addresses themes of European history, examining in particular the consequences of the collapse of the Soviet Union and Russian imperialism. In her book \u2018Europe, Wake Up!\u2019, she unequivocally advocates for pan-European thinking and the preservation of cultural and spiritual achievements, thereby offering vital impulses for contemporary Western society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Winfried Prize of the City of Fulda is an annual distinction presented since 2001. It is awarded for outstanding contributions to the protection of human rights, the promotion of peace, and the fostering of international understanding among the peoples of Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the years, the prize has been awarded to political, public, and religious figures, including Jean-Claude Juncker (former President of the European Commission), Navid Kermani (author and Islamic studies scholar), and Ulrich Wickert (German journalist).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nino Haratischwili was born in Tbilisi in 1983 and is regarded as one of the most prominent figures in contemporary German-language literature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For her creative endeavors as a novelist and theater director, Haratischwili has garnered several major accolades, including the Anna Seghers Prize and the Bertolt Brecht Prize.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The primary literary breakthrough of Haratischwili\u2019s career was the novel \u201cThe Eighth Life (For Brilka).\u201d Her other notable works include \u201cThe Cat and the General,\u201d \u201cLack of Light,\u201d and \u201cJuja.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"German author of Georgian origin Nino Haratischwili has been named the laureate of the prestigious Winfried Prize.
