The 79th edition of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe officially closes today. Over 25 days, the most celebrated cultural event in the world welcomed some 4,232 shows<\/strong> from 77 countries<\/strong> who undertook 61,277 performances<\/strong> across 306 venues<\/strong>.

As of 11:30 on the last day of Fringe 2026, 2,805,395* tickets<\/strong> had been issued for a programme packed with a broad range of dynamic themes: from artificial intelligence to cults; the manosphere to identity crisis; social class to Y2K nostalgia; the state of the world to resilience and hope. We encouraged audiences to\u00a0#MixItUp<\/strong> and the 8% increase in tickets issued from 2025 highlights that they did just that. Within the data, it was notable that the Fringe recorded its highest ever single-day attendance, with over 164,000 tickets being issued for performances on Saturday 15 August \u2013 1% higher than the previous peak on Saturday 17 August 2019.<\/p>\n

As the largest international performing arts marketplace in the world, this year the event attracted 1,864 accredited industry<\/strong> \u2013 including producers, programmers, bookers, talent agencies, and festivals from 63 countries<\/strong>, who explored the programme looking for work for onward touring and broadcast opportunities. In addition, the festival saw the highest number of accredited journalists in its history, with over 1,090 media professionals<\/strong> attending from 30 countries<\/strong>. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the first year of the new permanent Fringe Central<\/a> at 6 Infirmary Street, we estimate that more than 5,500 artists<\/strong> benefited from the services we provided. These included one-to-one meetings with Fringe Society staff, networking events, panel discussions and nearly 1,000 artists who joined the popular annual Meet the Media event on the first Saturday of the festival. \u00a0<\/p>\n

334 street performers, buskers and street artists<\/strong> performed in both the Royal Mile and Mound Precinct as part of the Fringe Street Events<\/a> programme, which saw Edinburgh\u2019s historic skyline act as a backdrop \u2013 with images and broadcast streamed around the world. Forty-one local schools, charities and community groups took part in the Fringe Days Out<\/a> programme, as well as 20 community groups and schools who took part in the Community Stage<\/a> on the Royal Mile performing to audiences from across the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tony Lankester, Chief Executive of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society<\/strong>, said: \u2018The Edinburgh Festival Fringe continues to be the world’s best platform for artists at any stage of their career to showcase their work to global audiences. As Richard Gadd put it so eloquently \u2013 the Fringe remains the only place where someone can arrive with an idea and leave with a career. For 79 years, the Fringe has thrived because of the creativity, grit and resilience of the Fringe community. There quite simply would be no Fringe without artists and the risks they take.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘Every year there is passionate debate and discussion among participants and Edinburgh\u2019s residents about every aspect of the Fringe. This year was no different, and while there are many divergent opinions; what we all agree on is the need to keep the Fringe affordable for artists, venues and audiences \u2013 protecting its reputation as a global marketplace. The Fringe Society will continue to work to keep that issue front and centre, advocating for the Fringe to be a fair and just platform for all voices. \u00a0<\/p>\n

‘As we look to the festival\u2019s 80th anniversary, it\u2019s appropriate that we reflect on what we want the Fringe to be, and how we preserve Edinburgh’s reputation as a world-class festival city. That\u2019s the challenge but also the opportunity \u2013 and we urge all stakeholders to make the most of it.\u2019

Next year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe will run from 06 \u2013 30 August 2027<\/strong>, its 80th anniversary year.<\/p>\n
