Spanish PM Pedro S\u00e1nchez said there were indications that
\nRussia and Israel had spread disinformation about Spain\u2019s migration policy,
\nprompting a mass influx of migrants into Ceuta<\/a>
\nlast month, Reuters reported<\/a>
\non Aug. 31.<\/p>\n

He also stated that there was no evidence Moroccan
\nauthorities were involved.<\/p>\n

Spanish opposition parties and some human rights
\norganizations previously accused Morocco of deliberately facilitating the mass
\nborder crossing. Morocco denied the allegations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen people talk and speculate about the participation of
\nMoroccan authorities, I deny this \u200boutright,\u201d
\nthe PM said.<\/p>\n

Spanish authorities said false reports circulated on
\nInstagram, TikTok, and other social media platforms claiming that migrants who
\nreached Ceuta by sea would be allowed to remain in Spain. The reports prompted
\nthousands of people to attempt to cross the border.<\/p>\n

S\u00e1nchez said a study by the European Union\u2019s diplomatic
\nservice, the European External Action Service, or EEAS, indicated that Russian
\nand Israeli networks had helped spread the disinformation in coordination with
\nfar-right networks.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said it \u200bwas
\nclear that the two countries had used the crisis to criticise Madrid due to
\ndissatisfaction with its position \u200bon
\nthe wars in Ukraine and Gaza, but gave no further details on the evidence he
\nhad of their involvement,\u201d Reuters wrote.<\/p>\n

S\u00e1nchez also announced that the Spanish government would
\nprovide an additional $195 million in emergency funding to help restore Ceuta\u2019s
\neconomy.<\/p>\n

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar said in a Twitter<\/a> post that
\nS\u00e1nchez was \u201clying shamelessly\u201d by accusing Israel of spreading false
\ninformation about the situation in Ceuta.\u00a0<\/p>\n
