From birthday cakes and wedding desserts to business gifting and themed tea parties, the longtime bakery has grown into something far larger than a traditional cake shop.

Now led by second-generation sisters Victoria and Emily, the family business continues to evolve while holding tightly to the hands-on traditions that built its reputation in the first place.

Victoria joined the bakery full-time, so her parents could enjoy semi-retirement after decades of building the business. Emily soon followed, bringing experience in marketing and finance. Together, the sisters combined family knowledge with fresh ideas and operational expertise to expand the bakery into new areas.

“My parents built a successful business. Our role was not only to continue it, but to grow it using our own knowledge, experience, and endurance,” Victoria shared. The sisters say growing up around the bakery gave them firsthand insight into both operations and customer expectations. “We grew up watching how the bakery operated, what worked, and what customers wanted,” Victoria said.

Tradition Meets Creativity

Inside the bakery, many things are still done the old-fashioned way. Whole eggs are cracked individually by hand. Flour and powdered sugar are sifted. Cake pans are individually prepared before the batter is poured.

Blooming Tulips Cake

“The kitchen bakes from scratch using quality ingredients. It is a hands-on operation,” Victoria explained. At the same time, the sisters continue introducing modern flavor combinations and updated presentations that appeal to today’s customers.

Classic desserts such as cupcakes, éclairs, napoleons, and fruit tarts remain customer favorites, but newer offerings have added a contemporary twist. Cakes featuring chocolate pistachio, lemon raspberry key lime, and fruit tarts decorated with figs and golden berries reflect the bakery’s balance between comfort and creativity.

For Victoria and Emily, desserts are tied closely to memory-making. “A cake is part of a celebration that creates memories,” Victoria said. “Each design represents a moment in someone’s life.” She noted that their cakes often become part of milestone moments, including weddings, graduations, baby showers, retirements, reunions, birthdays, and holidays.

More Than Cakes

While many locals know Cakes by Happy Eatery for its desserts, some may not realize the bakery has significantly expanded its catering and event offerings. The business now creates customizable luncheon catering, charcuterie boards, dessert tables, beverage stations, and interactive food experiences for businesses, nonprofits, and private gatherings.

Popular options include Walking Taco bars, ramen noodle stations, tea parties with petite sandwiches and pastries, and themed dessert displays. Customers can choose everything from casual paper plates to elegant fine china, depending on the atmosphere they want to create.

The bakery also offers delivery and full event setup services in homes, offices, and venues. Their tablescapes often include cake pedestals, dessert trees, food elevations, and décor designed to complement the celebration theme.

Themed Parties and Television-Inspired Trends

Victoria says themed parties have become increasingly popular, with inspiration often coming from television, streaming shows, internet trends, and vintage aesthetics. Some celebrations are sophisticated adult gatherings. Others are elaborate children’s parties.

The bakery has created everything from tea party desserts inspired by Regency-era television dramas to trendy heart-shaped cakes with vintage Lambeth piping, bow-adorned “coquette” cakes, burn-away cakes, and gender reveal celebrations.

Victoria laughed that sometimes the team even finds themselves researching television characters and storylines just to understand a customer’s vision fully. “Once the concept is understood, the bakery can create the design,” she said.

Corporate Gifting With Personality

Another area of growth has been business-to-business gifting and client appreciation packages. Rather than relying only on traditional December holiday gifts, many business clients now place seasonal or themed orders throughout the year. Thanksgiving pies have become especially popular among realtors and businesses seeking a non-religious client appreciation option.

The bakery has also produced large custom pie orders for Pi Day and Pride-themed events, sometimes fulfilling well over 100 pies at a time. Victoria says presentation matters just as much as flavor. The bakery offers upgraded packaging, customized gift boxes, branded edible logos, and curated assortments of sweet and savory treats.

Among the most requested corporate items are coffee cakes with decorative sugar flowers, custom logo desserts, and thoughtfully packaged treats with messages such as “You’re a Good Cookie.”

“We enjoy collaborating with our business clients and creating something unique,” Victoria said. For larger corporate orders, the bakery often recommends limiting flavor choices to three or four options to simplify ordering while still giving recipients variety.

Interactive dessert tables and beverage stations have also become popular for workplaces and client events. Offerings include hot apple cider bars, infused tea stations, mango lemonade, lavender lemonade, and bubble tea bars.

Giving Back to the Community

Community support remains central to the bakery’s mission. Since the start of the pandemic, Cakes by Happy Eatery has continued weekly food donations to CFH – Creating Foundations for Hope and its food pantry.

The organization, formerly known as Catholics for Housing, provides support services including housing assistance and programs designed to help families build stability and long-term success. Victoria says the bakery intentionally creates both sweet and savory options for donation days so families can enjoy something special. “It is important to support the community, be part of the neighborhood, and show compassion,” she shared.

Looking Ahead

After four decades, the sisters say their biggest inspiration continues to come directly from customers. “Our customers are part of our big circle of friends,” Victoria said. “We are always learning something new, working with ingredients in new ways, and brainstorming how we can create another fabulously delicious product.”

That willingness to evolve while staying rooted in tradition may be exactly why Cakes by Happy Eatery continues to remain part of so many celebrations, one generation after another.

Rebecca Barnes is the publisher of Prince William Living and Brides & Weddings magazines, CEO of Imagine, and a longtime community advocate in Prince William County.
