{"id":1180920,"date":"2026-09-01T16:38:33","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T16:38:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1180920\/"},"modified":"2026-09-01T16:38:33","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T16:38:33","slug":"walmart-to-pay-50-million-over-opioid-prescription-case-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1180920\/","title":{"rendered":"Walmart to Pay $50 Million Over Opioid Prescription Case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">(Gray News) &#8211; Walmart has agreed to pay $50 million to the federal government to resolve allegations that its pharmacies across the country illegally filled thousands of invalid prescriptions for opioids and other controlled substances, in violation of the Controlled Substances Act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The settlement, announced by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/walmart-agrees-pay-50-million-illegally-filling-unlawful-opioid-prescriptions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/walmart-agrees-pay-50-million-illegally-filling-unlawful-opioid-prescriptions\">U.S. Justice Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA),<\/a> caps a years-long civil case that accused Walmart of ignoring glaring red flags about dangerous prescriptions while prioritizing sales and patient volume. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The company has not admitted liability, and the government\u2019s claims remain allegations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The government\u2019s lawsuit, originally filed in December 2020 and amended in 2022 in federal court in Delaware, claims Walmart violated the Controlled Substances Act starting in June 2013.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">According to federal prosecutors:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"list | article-list\">\n<li>Walmart\u2019s own pharmacists repeatedly warned the company\u2019s corporate compliance team about certain prescribers they believed were operating as \u201cpill mills\u201d \u2014 medical practices that churn out high volumes of opioid prescriptions with little medical justification.<\/li>\n<li>Those warnings came through \u201crefusal-to-fill\u201d forms and other internal reports, documenting concerns about specific prescribers and prescriptions.<\/li>\n<li>Despite those reports, members of Walmart\u2019s compliance team allegedly continued to allow prescriptions from those prescribers to be filled, and \u201cprioritized other goals over CSA compliance.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">In one internal email cited by the government, a compliance director acknowledged that instead of digging into refusal-to-fill reports, the team saw \u201c[d]riving sales and patient awareness\u201d as \u201ca far better use of our Market Directors and Market manger\u2019s time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Federal officials also say individual Walmart pharmacists filled prescriptions they knew or should have known were invalid. Those prescriptions allegedly had obvious red flags, including:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"list | article-list\">\n<li>Prescriptions from prescribers already known as \u201cpill mills\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Dangerous combinations of opioids and other drugs<\/li>\n<li>\u201cCocktails\u201d of opioids and non-opioids frequently abused together<\/li>\n<li>Excessively repeated high-dose opioid prescriptions<\/li>\n<li>Repeated early refill requests for controlled substances<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Prosecutors argue that, taken together, those factors indicated prescriptions that should have been questioned or refused under federal law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">In addition to the $50 million payment, Walmart has entered into a memorandum of agreement with the DEA that lays out new obligations for how the company will handle controlled substances going forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Under that agreement, Walmart must:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"list | article-list\">\n<li>Create a reporting hotline for both employees and patients to flag suspected illegal dispensing of controlled substances.<\/li>\n<li>Proactively monitor prescription and dispensing patterns in its pharmacies to identify and address potentially illegal activity.<\/li>\n<li>Implement a formal process to evaluate prescribers suspected of illegal or improper prescribing and decide whether to continue filling their prescriptions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Federal officials say those measures are intended to tighten oversight inside one of the nation\u2019s largest pharmacy chains and help prevent similar problems in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 Gray Local Media, Inc.
