{"id":1181039,"date":"2026-09-01T18:23:17","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T18:23:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1181039\/"},"modified":"2026-09-01T18:23:17","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T18:23:17","slug":"more-than-10-eu-countries-eager-to-contribute-to-lebanon-mission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1181039\/","title":{"rendered":"More than 10 EU countries &#8216;eager to contribute to Lebanon mission&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-0-2ZIMBV3AOFHSJBCYA4OBWQ3FNQ\">More \u200bthan \u200b10 EU states \u2060are willing \u200bto contribute resources and \u2060people to a new military and civilian mission \u2060to advise and \u200btrain Lebanese \u2060forces after the withdrawal of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/europe\/2026\/04\/21\/france-mourns-unifil-soldier-as-lebanese-security-questions-haunt-withdrawal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/europe\/2026\/04\/21\/france-mourns-unifil-soldier-as-lebanese-security-questions-haunt-withdrawal\/\">UN peacekeepers<\/a> later this year, \u200cthe bloc&#8217;s foreign \u200bpolicy chief Kaja Kallas said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-1-AVZXY2K5GBA47IJLX26PC5SLEM\">The mission would aim to strengthen Lebanon&#8217;s Internal Security Forces to help free up the Lebanese army to focus on disarming the \u200bIran-backed armed \u200cgroup Hezbollah. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-3-NYJZHZUZLRH2DP5XE7RLSXLN6Y\">\u201cPlanning is progressing well, and we aim for the [European] Council decision to launch in October,\u201d Ms Kallas said after a meeting of EU Defence Ministers in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-5-RJZSESZQNRDYVLDAKVG63AIRVA\">Speaking alongside Ms Kallas, Irish Foreign and Defence Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/europe\/2026\/05\/22\/ireland-demands-eu-trade-ban-on-israeli-settlements-as-it-advances-its-own-embargo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/europe\/2026\/05\/22\/ireland-demands-eu-trade-ban-on-israeli-settlements-as-it-advances-its-own-embargo\/\">Helen McEntee<\/a> said it was important not to leave a void after the departure of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, scheduled for December 31. The US vetoed the renewal of Unifil&#8217;s mandate last year after nearly 50 years of deployment in southern Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-7-YFIZL4HZBJC3DHO7ODVYPXXG7A\">\u201cWe do not want to allow a gap to exist where we know there needs to be a continued presence. It\u2019s really important that we can reach an agreement soon,\u201d Ms McEntee said. With 274 military personnel deployed, Ireland is among the leading contributors to the force of more than 7,000 peacekeepers from 46 countries. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-9-QVANY7WYZJAZJJGWXEAYMWTCKM\">The aim is not to replace the Unifil mission, Ms Kallas said, but to help Lebanese security forces \u201cestablish order\u201d and support \u201cborder and maritime security\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-10-K6OKJ6FGFVC47M43PQZXBBN3FU\">\u201cWe are in close contact with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2026\/08\/31\/war-of-words-lebanon-tells-iran-to-liaise-through-state-institutions-amid-tensions-over-hezbollah\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2026\/08\/31\/war-of-words-lebanon-tells-iran-to-liaise-through-state-institutions-amid-tensions-over-hezbollah\/\">Lebanese government<\/a>, what they need from their side and what member states are willing to contribute,\u201d she said. \u201cBut there were more than 10 countries when I counted who are willing to contribute resources and people as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Dialogue with Lebanon<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-12-RK7TPNZP4NCMJLV3UXQIUEMSA4\">Lebanon is understood to want to extend Unifil&#8217;s mandate, which necessitates approval from the UN Security Council, but the US position on this remains unclear. France, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council, would be open to backing an extension, French Foreign Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2026\/08\/19\/iranian-diplomats-expelled-france-uae-tehran-conflict\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2026\/08\/19\/iranian-diplomats-expelled-france-uae-tehran-conflict\/\">Jean-Noel Barrot<\/a> said at a press conference in Paris.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-14-DODH3GIGN5B7NOG2R4ID3STUVU\">Mr Barrot said France was discussing Unifil&#8217;s future with Lebanese authorities. \u201cIf they deem that the situation requires an extension, we will support that position in our dialogue with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-15-OCV5QVJYKZFC5I4XKXSSHTVTI4\">In June, France and Italy announced a joint initiative to create an international coalition to replace Unifil, in co-ordination with the EU and Nato, to strengthen the Lebanese state. It is supported by the Lebanese leadership but opposed by Israel, which is fighting Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-16-7YJBVHXCSNFH7H5JTR5J4WQB5M\">Israel has long accused Unifil of failing in its mission to disarm Hezbollah, and that criticism has been embraced by US President Donald Trump&#8217;s administration. Unifil supporters respond that disarming Hezbollah was never its mandate, and that its role was only to support the historically weak Lebanese army in doing so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-18-GE6GD3OKC5HL3BZWV7BH7VKXDQ\">During a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2026\/08\/22\/future-of-peacekeeping-forces-in-lebanon-on-presidents-agenda-in-talks-with-meloni\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2026\/08\/22\/future-of-peacekeeping-forces-in-lebanon-on-presidents-agenda-in-talks-with-meloni\/\">visit in August to Rome<\/a>, Lebanese president Joseph Aoun thanked Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni \u201cfor the support Italy provides to Lebanon at various levels\u201d. The two leaders discussed growing international concern over the prospect of a Unifil withdrawal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-19-VIKWAPXQDRBU5P67V4JSOIJ2WU\">Lebanon and Israel have engaged in the past months in seven rounds of direct talks at the US embassy in Rome that focused on the so-called \u201cpilot zones\u201d. These are designated areas in which Israeli forces would withdraw, the Lebanese army would assume control and Hezbollah would disarm. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-20-TJNJSGZMKBHEBNGIXQZTSZ3MXI\">Yet so far, Israel has withdrawn from only two pilot zones.
