A newborn baby girl who was discovered dead at a property in Sheffield was “stabbed to death”, police have confirmed. <\/p>\n

The baby was found at a property on Holywell Heights in the Wincobank area, northeast Sheffield, after police were called over concerns over the newborn’s safety at 5.58am on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Despite the best efforts of paramedics and police, the baby died at the scene, South Yorkshire Constabulary confirmed. <\/p>\n

A forensic post-mortem examination conducted yesterday later confirmed the newborn died from stab wounds. <\/p>\n

Seven people, between the ages of 15 to 37, were arrested on suspicion of murder. <\/p>\n

Two of the seven, aged 26 and 37, were later released on bail.<\/p>\n

Police confirmed today a warrant has been obtained to keep the remaining five longer in custody as enquiries continue. <\/p>\n

Detective Chief Inspector Tom Woodward, who is leading the investigation, said: “We recognise this is deeply distressing for those who would have loved to have a chance to love this baby girl, for the emergency services who responded and for the community who will inevitably be shocked by this incident.<\/p>\n

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said officers were continuing their investigation and appealed to anyone with information to contact them. <\/p>\n
