Some leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, have since called for these sanctions to be lifted to support the country\u2019s economic recovery post-Assad.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani said at the press conference that the EU\u2019s move demonstrates the \u201cinternational will to support Syria,\u201d per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/news\/syria-fm-says-sanctions-relief-shows-international-will-to-support-country-4022d6fc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AFP<\/a>. He added that \u201cthe Syrian people today have a very important and historic opportunity to rebuild their country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The EU previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-suspends-economic-sanctions-on-syria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eased<\/a> sanctions on Syria in February to support \u201can inclusive political transition\u201d there, per the Council of the EU statement.<\/p>\n<p>Yet European officials remained cautious about the new government, led by former Al Qaeda member al-Sharaa, who has since moderated his stance.
