It\u2019s much easier to fit everything you want to see and do \u2013 known as weekend maxxing \u2013 into 48-hours when you\u2019re not battling with a million other tourists who want to do the same. To help you book your next city break, here\u2019s 7 of my favourite destinations \u2013 all accessible by train or plane with some great new hotels and experiences to try. Some, such as Amsterdam, Barcelona and Venice are city break classics. The others, including Budapest, Lille, Lisbon and Berlin, are often overlooked or underrated. Here\u2019s what to do, see and buy in each with top tips on living in them like a local (even for just a few days). <\/p>\n

1. Secret gardens and gondola rides in Venice<\/strong><\/p>\n

            You can\u2019t help but sing \u2018O Sole Mio\u2019 and reach for a Cornetto (or an Italian gelato) when you see gondolas in Venice<\/a>. The city is impossibly romantic (and slightly clich\u00e9d), but don\u2019t let that \u2013 or the tourists in St Mark\u2019s Square \u2013 put you off. It\u2019s a working city at heart and you\u2019ll find locals who live here eating and drinking along quiet canals just moments away from the Grand one. Plus, everyone should ride a gondola at least once in their life. Dating back to the 13th century, it was once a hostel for pilgrims and its original frescoes have been lovingly restored and combined with elegant modern touches. Staff are friendly and welcoming \u2013 ask concierge Ivan about exclusive tours; we did one that explored Venice\u2019s secret courtyard gardens, hidden behind palazzo walls. Ca\u2019 di Dio is in Castello, 10 minutes from St Mark\u2019s and directly in front of the Arsenale Vaporetto stop near the 61st Venice Biennale<\/a> (until 22 November). The hotel has its own dock for water taxis, too. <\/p>\n

            EAT & DRINK:<\/strong> Seafood from the lagoon stars in Venetian dishes such as sarde in saor (sardines marinated with onions, pine nuts and raisins). For fine dining, the six-course tasting menu at VeRo<\/a> at Ca\u2019 di Dio is the best in the city.<\/p>\n

            TAKE HOME:<\/strong> Hand-blown Murano glass from the Venier<\/a> factory or delicate lace from neighbouring Burano.<\/p>\n

              Divided into two sides (west, Buda, east, Pest) by the Danube, the Hungarian capital remains surprisingly crowd-free, especially in autumn. Budapest <\/a> has one of Europe\u2019s most lovely parliament buildings, baroque castles, a 19th-century church with an elevator and bohemian \u2018ruin bars\u2019 in crumbling courtyards, there\u2019s plenty to do. On the quieter, Buda side, take the funicular to castle hill for panoramic views from Fisherman\u2019s Bastion. Across the chain bridge in Pest, you\u2019ll find shops, restaurants and moving Second World War memorials \u2013 don\u2019t miss the 60 pairs of bronze shoes lining the riverbank by the Hungarian Parliament, representing Hungarian Jews shot here in 1944-1945. If you\u2019re travelling with kids, do a walking tour with Budapest Flow<\/a> to find tiny statues hidden across the city by Ukrainian-Hungarian guerilla artist Mih\u00e1ly Kolodko.<\/p>\n

              LIVE LIKE A LOCAL:<\/strong> Hundreds of naturally heated springs bubble up beneath the city and relaxing in one of its nine thermal baths has been part of the culture since Roman times. The largest is Sz\u00e9chenyi <\/a>(daily entrance from around \u00a332pp) in the City Park, where you\u2019ll also find Budapest Zoo, Heroes\u2019 Square and Vajdahunyad Castle. There are 18 pools at varying temperatures, including two stunning outdoor ones. There\u2019s a \u2018Sparty\u2019<\/a> every Saturday night and a thermal beer spa<\/a> inside with private tubs filled with hops and unlimited beer on tap.<\/p>\n

              STAY AT:<\/strong> The new Radisson Collection Hotel, Basilica Budapest<\/a>, right next to St Stephen\u2019s Basilica with rooms from \u00a3170 a night including breakfast. A short walk from Budapest Nyugati station and the Hungarian State Opera, its 71 elegant rooms are housed in a former school and there\u2019s a fusion restaurant and bar, ISSEI, on the roof.<\/p>\n

              EAT & DRINK:<\/strong> Time Out Market Budapest<\/a> in Corvin Palace on Blaha Lujza Square brings together the best of the city\u2019s foodie scene. There are 11 kitchens to choose from \u2013 for traditional dishes, try Canteen by two Michelin-starred chef Istv\u00e1n Pesti. For goulash with Roma music, try family-run K\u00e9hli Vend\u00e9gl\u0151<\/a> in \u00d3buda.<\/p>\n

              TAKE HOME:<\/strong> A \u00a32 packet of Hungarian paprika from a supermarket. Look for Szeged or Kalocsa on the label, as well as whether it\u2019s \u00e9des (sweet and mild) or cs\u00edp\u0151s (spicy).<\/p>\n

              3. Beer and browsing for books in Lille<\/strong>\"Square<\/p>\n

              LASSALLE MATHIEU<\/p>\n

              One of the easiest and most accessible cities in France (it takes just 82 minutes to get there by Eurostar<\/a> from central London), Lille is surprisingly underrated. Often called the \u2018Paris of the North\u2019, thanks to its grand neoclassical architecture, buzzy caf\u00e9 culture and innovative modern art museums, it\u2019s a far more serene alternative to the French capital. But it\u2019s a lot more affordable and the locals are friendlier, too. <\/p>\n

              Step off the Eurostar at Lille-Europe, walk for 10 minutes and you\u2019ll find yourself in the Place du G\u00e9n\u00e9ral de Gaulle, Lille\u2019s impressive main square named after the former military leader and statesman born here in 1890. The largest city in Hauts-de-France,<\/a> Lille is only nine miles from the Belgium border giving the charming cobbled streets of Vieux-Lille (the old town) a distinctly Flemish flavour. <\/p>\n

              Don\u2019t miss browsing for vintage books, rare comics and film memorabilia at stalls inside La Vieille Bourse (Old Stock Exchange) or taking a stroll around the Citadel Park as its trees turn shades of burnished bronze. Art lovers should head to recently reopened LAM<\/a>, a private collection of over 9,000 works of 20th and 21st century art including Klee, Miro, Modigliani and Picasso in Lille\u2019s leafy suburbs. In the nearby town of Roubaix you\u2019ll find one of France\u2019s most unusual museums, La Piscine<\/a>, an art deco municipal swimming pool that\u2019s been lovingly restored (sans water but with its original stained-glass windows and blue mosaic tiles) and surrounded by fine art sculptures (by the likes of Rodin), which appear as if they\u2019re about to dive in. Add in temporary art, fashion and textile exhibitions (on heritage brands such as La Redoute) and you\u2019ve got northern France\u2019s equivalent of the V&A.<\/p>\n

              LIVE LIKE A LOCAL:<\/strong> Forget vino, Lille is the \u2018beer capital of France\u2019 with strong IPAs being the tipple of choice as well as pale ales, sours and stouts. Hauts-de-France is home to 234 breweries and there are over 500 bars dotted around this fun-loving city. Try a tasting session at C\u00e9lestin<\/a>, a local micro-brewery or pick your favourite from at least 28 on tap at La Capsule<\/a>, the oldest and coolest spot to order ‘une pinte’.<\/p>\n

              STAY AT: <\/strong>Oceania Les Augustins<\/a>, a stylish four-star boutique (rooms from around \u00a3130 a night) in the city centre housed inside a former bank. There\u2019s a small spa in the basement and an indoor pool in the vault surrounded by the safe deposit boxes.<\/p>\n

              EAT & DRINK:<\/strong> The region\u2019s indulgent Flemish cuisine in a traditional estaminet \u2013 Carbonnade Flamande (beef stew simmered in beer) and \u2018Le Welsh\u2019 (bread soaked in beer and smothered with fromage) are perfect for chillier Autumn days. For something swankier head to the rooftop of N<\/a>\u016b<\/a>, next to the train station for incredible views over the city and French classics such as beef tartare, snail fricassee and sole meuni\u00e8re. Foodeez Tours<\/a> offer three-hour tours including six tastings at hidden gourmet gems. Go hungry and try to resist the gooey brie in Fromagerie Gaillard (we couldn\u2019t!).<\/p>\n

              TAKE HOME: <\/strong>A beautifully packaged box of M\u00e9ert<\/a> waffles, made with brioche style pastry since 1849. The originals are filled with Madagascar vanilla cream (and were Charles de Galle\u2019s favourite) but we preferred roasted pistachio and morello cherry.<\/p>\n

              4. Past\u00e9is and panoramic views in Lisbon\"yellow<\/p>\n

                Lisbon<\/a> is one of those cities people rave about relentlessly. And with its honey-coloured light, tiled facades, iconic yellow trams and landmarks such as the Bel\u00e9m Tower, it\u2019s easy to see why. Portugal\u2019s capital feels effortlessly cool yet still wonderfully lived-in, with a thriving creative scene in districts such as Cais do Sodr\u00e9. Browse independent boutiques along Rua da Boavista before settling in at Boavista Social Club<\/a> for a glass of vinho verde for less than \u00a36. As the sun dips, join locals for the views at Miradouro de Santa Catarina, where the Tagus River sparkles below. Portugal\u2019s warm weather stretches well into autumn.<\/p>\n

                LIVE LIKE A LOCAL:<\/strong> Skip the tourist cafe chains around Pra\u00e7a do Com\u00e9rcio and head uphill to laidback Gra\u00e7a instead. Here, locals order a quick \u2018bica\u2019 \u2013 Portuguese espresso \u2013 and somehow make it last for an hour.<\/p>\n

                STAY AT:<\/strong> Andaz Lisbon<\/a>, which opened in March, is set within a restored former bank in the heart of the city. Its 170 rooms (from \u00a3299 a night) feature locally sourced artwork, handcrafted ceramics and deep-red tiled bathrooms, while Byredo toiletries add a touch of luxury. As evening falls, head to the rooftop restaurant and bar Luzzi for cocktails with views of S\u00e3o Jorge Castle.<\/p>\n

                EAT & DRINK:<\/strong> For a memorable seafood dinner, book Barbela CPM<\/a>, where chef Leandro Carreira transforms Portugal\u2019s daily catch into something extraordinary. Don\u2019t miss the dry-aged fish and the tuna tartare on a seaweed waffle. No visit to Lisbon is complete without a pastel de nata \u2013 the city\u2019s most famous ones come from Past\u00e9is de Bel\u00e9m, where the closely guarded recipe dates back to the 19th century. Skip the famously long takeaway queue and head through the side entrance instead for one hot from the oven, dusted generously with cinnamon and icing sugar. Worth every flaky crumb.<\/p>\n

                TAKE HOME:<\/strong> Before you leave, browse Lisbon\u2019s independent shops for hand-painted azulejos (tiles) or artisan olive oil. Beautifully packaged sardines and a bottle of the traditional cherry liqueur, ginjinha, make excellent souvenirs, too, but it\u2019s the rattling trams, unhurried coffee stops and pretty, cobbled streets that you\u2019ll remember.<\/p>\n

                5. <\/strong>Cathedrals and croquetas in Barcelona<\/strong><\/p>\n

                  Catalonia\u2019s sunny (even in October and November) capital is loved for its Mediterranean beaches, laidback vibe and modernist buildings \u2013 especially those by visionary architect Antoni Gaud\u00ed. This year marks 100 years since his death and has seen the completion after 144 years of his masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia<\/a>, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In June, Pope Leo XIV saw the final piece, a monumental 100-ton cross, placed on top of the Tower of Jesus Christ, completing the cathedral and making it the world\u2019s tallest at 566ft. Its soaring Gothic facade and kaleidoscopic stained-glass windows, reflecting light into the vast interior, inspire otherworldly reverence. But with more than five million visitors a year, it\u2019s also Barcelona<\/a>\u2019s busiest attraction, so skip the queues by booking a guided morning tour, from \u00a368, through TUI Musement<\/a>. Other Gaud\u00ed centenary celebrations are being held this year at Park G\u00fcell, Casa Batll\u00f3 and La Pedrera.<\/p>\n

                  LIVE LIKE A LOCAL:<\/strong> Wander through the Gothic Quarter\u2019s maze of streets before stopping at La Boqueria Market for fried croquetas, seafood and pan con tomate at counter-side food stalls. Avoid the street performers on La Rambla and stroll the backstreets instead.<\/p>\n

                  STAY AT:<\/strong> TUI<\/a> offers great value two-night city breaks in Barcelona from \u00a3356pp, staying at H10 Madison, a stylish four-star hotel in the Gothic Quarter, within walking distance of the city\u2019s major sights. The rooftop terrace and pool has views of the Sagrada Familia and TUI city breaks include return flights.<\/p>\n

                  EAT & DRINK:<\/strong> Bar del Pla<\/a> serves a spin on traditional tapas \u2013 try the meatballs in squid ink \u2013 in a restaurant decorated with empty bottles drunk and signed by previous guests. Barcelona\u2019s oldest restaurant, Can Culleretes<\/a>, serves a great-value set tapas menu, including classic delicacies such as jam\u00f3n Ib\u00e9rico and crema Catalana, for under \u00a330.<\/p>\n

                  TAKE HOME:<\/strong> A bit of Catalan history made by you at an espadrille workshop<\/a> (around \u00a385pp). This worker\u2019s shoe goes back centuries and has become one of Spain\u2019s most enduring fashion exports (beside Zara). Choose from more than 100 designs and learn how to thread and wear your own ribbons like the Catalan girls do.<\/p>\n

                  6. <\/strong>Sausages and walking the wall in Berlin<\/strong>\"famous<\/p>\n

                    Mostly destroyed in the Second World War, Berlin<\/a> was divided until 1989 when the Wall fell and it started to reinvent itself. Now unified, you only have to travel around the S- and U-Bahn trains at night to experience the true energy of a city where young and old are having the time of their life \u2013 thanks partly to the low cost of living; a pint of the local Berliner Pilsner costs as little as \u00a32.50. Beyond the obvious sights, such as the Brandenburg Gate and UNESCO-listed Museum Island, check out some of the quirkier attractions in former East Berlin. The Fotografiska Museum<\/a> is housed in a building that was used as a post-Wall art squat, while the Boros Collection<\/a> shows modern art in a huge concrete brutalist building that was in turns a Second World War air-raid shelter, KGB HQ, fruit and veg store and nightclub. Expect an influx of literary tourists once Berlin Noir, an adaptation of Phillip Kerr\u2019s brilliant Bernie Gunther crime trilogy, is released on Apple TV. Starring Jack Lowden, Maxine Peake and Colin Firth, it was partly filmed in hipster area Neuk\u00f6lln.<\/p>\n

                    LIVE LIKE A LOCAL:<\/strong> Rent a bike by the hour and explore this extremely flat, safe city that\u2019s full of parks, forests and lakes. If you want to see what remains of the Wall, head to the East Side Gallery<\/a> in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, a 1.3km section that\u2019s been preserved and painted by street artists to celebrate peace. The best way to see the city from above is to climb one of the 20 or so grass-covered Tr\u00fcmmerberge. These artificial hills were made from rubble painstakingly cleared by women after the war and there\u2019s a statue that commemorates them in Hasenheide Park. But Berlin\u2019s turbulent history is everywhere \u2013 in Teufelsberg, you\u2019ll find the remains of a Cold War listening station; or cycle along the Spree and you\u2019ll pass buildings built during all the different political eras, from Imperialist to Fascist to Communist to modern day. Most noticeable is the number of bullet holes scarring the older buildings, acting as poignant wounds of remembrance.<\/p>\n

                    STAY AT:<\/strong> The iconic Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin<\/a> (rooms from \u00a3360 a night) directly overlooks the Brandenburg Gate. One of the world\u2019s most futuristic hotels when it opened in 1907, with hot and cold running water and its own electricity plant, its guest list includes Albert Einstein, Charlie Chaplin and Greta Garbo \u2013 who uttered her immortal words, \u2018I want to be alone,\u2019 while filming here. It\u2019s still the German government\u2019s unofficial guesthouse and has a Royal Suite named after the late Queen Elizabeth.<\/p>\n

                    EAT & DRINK:<\/strong> German sausages \u2013 get a simple one in a roll at Konnopke\u2019s Imbiss<\/a>, the original currywurst stand at Eberswalder Stra\u00dfe station. For something sweeter, Winterfeldt Schokoladen<\/a> is a beautiful chocolate emporium in an old-fashioned pharmacy in Sch\u00f6neberg.<\/p>\n

                    TAKE HOME:<\/strong> Anything from the Oldthing<\/a> Antique Flea Market on the first weekend of every month at the Trabrennbahn Karlshorst racetrack. The 600 or so stalls sell everything from German vintage decor to retro kitchenware, postcards, magazines and rare vinyl.<\/p>\n

                    7. <\/strong>Stroopwafels and cycling in Amsterdam<\/strong>\"colorful<\/p>\n

                      There\u2019s no wrong time of year to visit the Dutch capital, but in autumn, the crowds disperse and the picturesque tree-lined canals turn yellow and gold. Your mode of transport? Bicycle, of course. Excellent cycle lanes and minimal traffic make exploring the grid-like streets of Amsterdam<\/a> relaxing even for amateur cyclists. This autumn\u2019s big-ticket exhibitions include Matisse at the H\u2019ART Museum and Kusama at the Stedelijk Museum. There\u2019s also a burgeoning foodie scene, buzzy nightlife and great vintage shops.<\/p>\n

                      LIVE LIKE A LOCAL:<\/strong> In the trendy Jordaan neighbourhood, you\u2019ll discover hip pavement cafes, independent boutiques \u2013 visit Archive 1906 for vintage designer finds \u2013 and magpie\u2019s paradise Noordermarkt, where jewellery, antiques and delicious organic food will lure you into the market square. Swing by the Amsterdam Cheese Museum<\/a> for a wax-wrapped souvenir to take home.<\/p>\n

                      STAY AT:<\/strong> Elevate your mini-break by going all-out on a canalside stay at the new Rosewood Amsterdam<\/a>, (rooms from around \u00a3955 a night) which opened last year in the city\u2019s former Palace of Justice. Seek post-sightseeing sanctuary at the Asaya Spa and \u2018slow dine\u2019 at Eeuwen restaurant before indulging in \u2018Provo\u2019 \u2013 a 1950s and 1960s Dutch counterculture that signifies a rebellious spirit \u2013 with cocktails at the hotel\u2019s speakeasy, Advocatuur.<\/p>\n

                      EAT & DRINK:<\/strong> Keep lunch light \u2013 the chicken Caesar salad with anchovy dressing at foodie hotspot Little Bonfire<\/a> is delicious, as are the mid-century interiors in autumnal browns and burgundies. If you\u2019re able to nab a reservation at one of its four tables, Europe\u2019s smallest pancake house, Upstairs Pannenkoekenhuis<\/a>, will charm you with a warm welcome and sweet aroma as you walk up the (very) steep 16th-century staircase. Go big for dinner and make like the locals who head to Fiaschetteria \u2018Pistoia\u2019<\/a> for simple but truly exceptional Tuscan pasta. The tagliatelle al tartufo, \u00a324, is best washed down with a \u2018fiasco\u2019 of Italian red wine.<\/p>\n

                      TAKE HOME:<\/strong> Traditional Dutch stroopwafels<\/a> \u2013 thin, round biscuits made from two layers of sweet dough held together by syrup, best warmed over your coffee cup. Buy them in Amsterdam\u2019s oldest bakery, Hans Egstorf, and take them home in a handmade Delft Blue painted jar.
