{"id":1183858,"date":"2026-09-03T07:23:18","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T07:23:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1183858\/"},"modified":"2026-09-03T07:23:18","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T07:23:18","slug":"hydrogen-van-trial-launched-in-swansea-by-wales-west","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1183858\/","title":{"rendered":"Hydrogen van trial launched in Swansea by Wales &#038; West"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A gas emergency van powered by hydrogen is being put to work on the roads around <a href=\"https:\/\/swanseabaynews.com\/tag\/swansea\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Swansea<\/a>, in a trial its operator hopes will point the way to taking diesel out of its fleet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/swanseabaynews.com\/category\/news\/utilities\/wales-and-west-utilities\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wales &amp; West Utilities<\/a> is running the prototype Ford Transit for 12 weeks, with its crews using it daily across the wider Swansea and west Wales area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of an engine burning fuel, the van carries a fuel cell, which turns <a href=\"https:\/\/swanseabaynews.com\/tag\/hydrogen\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hydrogen<\/a> gas into electricity on board. West Utilities)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not the first hydrogen vehicle on Swansea\u2019s streets. <a href=\"https:\/\/swanseabaynews.com\/tag\/hyppo\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hyppo<\/a> ran a <a href=\"https:\/\/swanseabaynews.com\/driving-change-dawsons-trials-hydrogen-car-for-clean-air-day\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hydrogen car trial with estate agent Dawsons<\/a> in the city last summer, and the company\u2019s H2Bay site is intended to anchor a wider hydrogen economy in the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is some local history in play too: the fuel cell principle was first demonstrated in the 1840s by Sir William Grove, a scientist born in Swansea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stephen Offley, transport lead in the company\u2019s net zero and sustainability team, said the fleet was a significant part of its carbon footprint. \u201cThis is clearly an area where we can make huge carbon savings with the right technology,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are confident that hydrogen will have an important role to play in the decarbonisation of road transport as we move away from fossil fuels.
