\u2018The hinge is the heart of the razr interaction,\u2018 Motorola North American Marketing Director Maria Jose Martin tells<\/a> designboom.<\/strong> \u2018It\u2019s the exact point of movement that turns every flip into a brilliant reveal.\u2018 On a phone whose identity has always depended on that movement, the crystal becomes part of the gesture instead of sitting somewhere purely decorative.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The design started with the surface around it. \u2018We really started with the overall look and feel of the phone and wanted to create a base that would let the Swarovski crystals stand out,\u2018 Martin explains.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The team<\/strong><\/a> at Motorola chose PANTONE Meteorite, a deep charcoal finish that gives the stones a dark background, then added a quilted, leather-inspired texture across the exterior. The 35 Swarovski<\/strong><\/a> Silver Night crystals sit within this geometric field, while the larger stone breaks from the pattern at the hinge.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u2018It\u2019s a deep, understated color that creates a really nice contrast with the crystals and lets them catch the light as you move the phone,\u2018 she says.<\/strong> The official release confirms that each of the smaller crystals is positioned by hand.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n MAKING THE CRYSTALS PART OF THE PHONE<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Finding that arrangement took some back-and-forth between Motorola and Swarovski. \u2018We spent a lot of time looking at how the crystals worked with the phone\u2019s silhouette and how they would catch the light from different angles,\u2018 Martin explains.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The final count landed at 35 across the body, with their placement responding to both the quilted surface and the changing orientation of a folding device. \u2018We ultimately landed on 35 Swarovski Crystals in Silver Night, placed throughout the design to create a look that felt balanced and intentional. And then there\u2019s the 32-facet crystal on the hinge, which gives the phone this really beautiful finishing touch.\u2018<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n A phone gets handled far more aggressively than most objects associated with crystal embellishment. It moves between pockets, bags, tables and hands throughout the day, so the decorative treatment still had to tolerate constant contact. Motorola includes a transparent protective case that leaves the exterior visible while adding another layer between the stones and everything around them.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Martin describes the development:<\/strong> \u2018It\u2019s a search for the right balance between jewelry and technology,\u2018 a phrase that fits the project especially well: the razr already has a compact, object-like quality when closed, and the Swarovski treatment leans further into that character.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n WHEN A PHONE BECOMES SOMETHING YOU WEAR<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The collaboration also arrives at a moment when much of the smartphone market has settled into a familiar visual language of flat glass rectangles. Motorola has kept the razr moving in another direction, using the fold itself as an expressive feature and treating color, texture and exterior hardware as visible parts of the object.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u2018Your phone is something you carry, touch and look at all day, so we think it should feel personal and reflect who you are,\u2018 Martin says.<\/strong> For the Swarovski edition, that idea becomes unusually literal. The phone catches light as it moves, its surface has a pronounced tactile pattern, and opening it introduces another physical action into an experience usually dominated by tapping glass.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n This physicality is also what Martin means when Motorola talks about making technology more \u2018sensorial.\u2019 \u2018We\u2019re really talking about designing for the whole experience,\u2018 she adds.<\/strong> \u2018It\u2019s all about how the phone looks, feels and even moves with you throughout the day.\u2018<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The razr is especially suited to that approach because its form has always invited interaction beyond the screen.
