Police have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder following two collisions at the meeting point of the M4 and M5 motorways near Bristol\"Attempted<\/p>\n

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after two collisions on a busy motorway interchange.<\/p>\n

Avon and Somerset Police<\/a> were called to the meeting point of the M4 and M5 motorways at the Almondsbury Interchange, near Bristol, at around 9pm on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

It followed a report that a car had collided with the central reservation on the M5 northbound, before the driver got out of his vehicle and there was a second crash involving two vehicles on the M4.<\/p>\n

National Highways announced a closure of the motorway and said at the time that traffic could not join the M4 westbound from either direction. The collisions happened at junction 20 of the M5 and junction 15 at the Almondsbury Interchange.<\/p>\n

Witnesses told how drivers had started exiting their vehicles on the motorway while the traffic was at a standstill and emergency services got to work.<\/p>\n

Avon and Somerset Police have now provided more details of the events on Wednesday night and the circumstances surrounding the road closure, reports Bristol Live<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A man has since been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, and on suspicion of being unfit to drive through drink or drugs. He remains in hospital with “potentially life changing” injuries, police said.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson said: “We were called at just after 9pm yesterday on Wednesday 2 September to the Almondsbury interchange on the M5 northbound and M4 westbound following reports of a collision.<\/p>\n

“The initial report was of a car which had collided with the central reservation of the carriageway. The driver of the car then got out of his vehicle and was involved in a further collision involving two other vehicles travelling on the M4 carriageway.<\/p>\n

“The driver and passenger of the initial vehicle were taken to hospital, where the passenger has since been discharged.<\/p>\n

“The driver, who has been arrested and remains under police supervision in hospital, is not thought to have life-threatening injuries but are potentially life changing.<\/p>\n

“The drivers of the other cars involved are aiding us with our enquiries and are being treated as witnesses. Both carriageways were closed while emergency services attended but reopened at 10.30pm yesterday.<\/p>\n
