{"id":1186069,"date":"2026-09-04T13:17:13","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T13:17:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1186069\/"},"modified":"2026-09-04T13:17:13","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T13:17:13","slug":"new-zealand-drugs-regulator-approves-use-of-mdma-to-treat-severe-ptsd-new-zealand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1186069\/","title":{"rendered":"New Zealand drugs regulator approves use of MDMA to treat severe PTSD | New Zealand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Two psychiatrists in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/newzealand\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Zealand<\/a> won approval on Friday to prescribe pharmaceutical-grade MDMA to people with severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The move by New Zealand\u2019s pharmaceutical regulatory body Medsafe makes the country only the second worldwide to approve the party drug for use in treating PTSD, following Australia in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cPTSD ruins lives and is difficult to treat,\u201d said the deputy prime minister, David Seymour, who last year backed the approval of magic mushrooms to treat people with severe depression. \u201cMDMA can be very effective at treating it through psychedelic-assisted therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">New Zealand is committed to opening up access to \u201cinnovative treatments\u201d, Seymour said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">PTSD is a mental health condition that develops after a person experiences or is threatened by traumatic events such as death, combat or sexual assault.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">There are clinical trials in the United States after the Food and Drug Administration rejected legalising MDMA\u2019s medicinal use in 2024, saying there was not enough evidence it was safe or effective.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Pharmaceutical treatment options for PTSD in the US have so far been limited to two antidepressants that require three months of dosing to take effect.
