{"id":1187789,"date":"2026-09-05T11:29:37","date_gmt":"2026-09-05T11:29:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1187789\/"},"modified":"2026-09-05T11:29:37","modified_gmt":"2026-09-05T11:29:37","slug":"five-edinburgh-firms-named-and-shamed-for-failing-to-pay-minimum-wage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1187789\/","title":{"rendered":"Five Edinburgh firms named and shamed for failing to pay minimum wage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Five Edinburgh firms have been named and shamed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/short-changing-staff-isnt-a-shortcut-to-success-nearly-660-employers-announced-as-failing-to-pay-the-minimum-wage\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UK Government<\/a> for failing to pay staff <a href=\"https:\/\/theedinburghreporter.co.uk\/2015\/02\/government-names-more-minimum-wage-offenders\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"102826\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">minimum wage.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A horse trader and training yard in the Pentlands a Pepe\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/theedinburghreporter.co.uk\/2026\/07\/chicken-restaurant-set-to-open-branch-midlothian-branch-in-former-pub\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"652747\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Piri Piri <\/a>Branch, and a well-regarded Indian restaurant were among the Edinburgh businesses included on the list.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A total of 27 workers were underpaid \u00a326,036.43 in Edinburgh, with 27,000 workers underpaid \u00a34m UK-wide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mrs Fiona Burgoyne, who runs the Horse Choice equestrian centre in the Pentlands, was the worst offender in the capital, and was forced to pay back \u00a322,422.75 to four workers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.deadlinenews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/sarah-agnew-tKSdSJjb9zo-unsplash.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"705\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/sarah-agnew-tKSdSJjb9zo-unsplash-1024x705.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Sarah Agnew on Unsplash\" class=\"wp-image-1277516\"\/><\/a>Photo by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/@sarahagnewphotos?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sarah Agnew<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/photos\/a-pile-of-british-coins-sitting-on-top-of-a-table-tKSdSJjb9zo?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Unsplash<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BNB Property Services, which offers cleaning services in Portobello, was the next worse, underpaying two staff members \u00a31,460.51, while the Golden Ambal Indian restaurant on Leith Walk underpaid one worker \u00a3915.20.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new Pepe\u2019s Piri branch in Gilmerton owed 14 workers a total of \u00a3700, while Shish Edinburgh, a Turkish restaurant on Potterrow failed to pay six members of staff a total of \u00a3537.97.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Murdoch Allan &amp; Son, who owed seven workers \u00a324,150.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dynamic Retail Ltd (which trades as Scotfresh) in Dundee was the fourth worst offender, owing more than \u00a314,000, and Neil Barr Decorating Services Limited in Irvine rounded off the top five, owing more than \u00a310,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Businesses in hospitality, retail, construction and food production were all represented on the list.
