{"id":1187915,"date":"2026-09-05T13:15:22","date_gmt":"2026-09-05T13:15:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1187915\/"},"modified":"2026-09-05T13:15:22","modified_gmt":"2026-09-05T13:15:22","slug":"weve-never-seen-anything-quite-like-this-a-strange-ten-sided-structure-has-been-spotted-on-saturns-north-pole","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1187915\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;We&#8217;ve Never Seen Anything Quite Like This&#8221;: A Strange Ten-Sided \u201cStructure\u201d Has Been Spotted on Saturn&#8217;s North Pole"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NASA\u2019s Hubble Space Telescope has glimpsed a strange ten-sided <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/these-features-were-completely-unexpected-webb-telescope-detects-unexplained-structures-in-saturns-atmosphere\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">atmospheric<\/a> wave at <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/we-knew-something-strange-was-happening-saturns-northern-lights-drive-a-planetary-heat-engine-solving-decades-long-rotation-mystery\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Saturn<\/a>\u2019s south pole, the first regular-sided jet pattern ever observed there.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent paper published in Science Advances, researchers examined <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/saturns-largest-moon-may-be-the-remnant-of-an-ancient-impact-new-research-reveals\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Saturn<\/a>\u2019s peculiar decahedron, detecting signs of an entirely new atmospheric phenomenon for the <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/esas-euclid-telescope-just-spotted-two-record-breaking-ancient-giants-among-the-most-remote-objects-in-the-cosmos\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gas giant<\/a>. A similar hexagon-shaped wave resides at <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/these-features-were-completely-unexpected-webb-telescope-detects-unexplained-structures-in-saturns-atmosphere\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Saturn<\/a>\u2019s north pole but differs in noticeable ways.<\/p>\n<p>Years of Hubble observations from 2023 to 2025 allowed the team to trace subtle hints that they eventually resolved into the decagonal wave at <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/saturns-rings-and-tilt-could-be-the-result-of-an-ancient-missing-moon\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Saturn<\/a>\u2019s south pole.<\/p>\n<p>Observing the Solar System<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve never seen anything quite like this in Saturn\u2019s southern hemisphere,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/missions\/hubble\/nasas-hubble-tracks-new-decagon-encircling-saturns-south-pole\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said co-author Amy Simon<\/a>, OPAL principal investigator, at NASA\u2019s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. \u201cThe northern hexagon has been there every time we\u2019ve looked for more than 40 years. This feature is different \u2014 it appears to be strengthening, giving us the rare opportunity to watch a giant atmospheric pattern develop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since its 1990 launch into low Earth orbit, the Hubble Space Telescope has been observing our solar system, uncovering new details about our planetary neighbors. One such project is the Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program, which began collecting data with observations of Uranus in 2014 and now provides the crucial evidence for this discovery, with high-resolution images that resolve murky hints from ground-based observations.<\/p>\n<p>As Saturn\u2019s seasons changed, its south pole came into alignment with ground-based observatories. In images from those telescopes submitted to the Planetary Virtual Observatory Laboratory, amateur astronomers Trevor Barry and Jean-Paul Oger, along with Agust\u00edn S\u00e1nchez-Lavega of the University of the Basque Country in Spain, noticed something interesting happening on the gas giant.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-51881 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Saturn-two-views-300x150.jpg\" alt=\"Saturn two views\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\"  data- style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/300;\"\/>Since 2023, the decagon has continued to develop in what scientists believe may be a new atmospheric pattern on Saturn. Credit: NASA, ESA, STScI, Agustin S\u00e1nchez-Lavega (UPV), Amy Simon (NASA-GSFC), Michael Wong (UC Berkeley); Image Processing: Alyssa Pagan<br \/>\nA Strange Band on Saturn<\/p>\n<p>The researchers spotted an undulating band along Saturn\u2019s south pole, which, in further 2025 ground-based telescope images, began to suggest a decagonal (ten-sided) structure. With its incredible image clarity and spatial resolution, Hubble\u2019s imagery finally allowed researchers to resolve the decagonal shape with certainty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven Saturn\u2019s symmetry in its north-south jet stream system, we have been searching for a counterpart to Saturn\u2019s northern hexagon on the south pole in Hubble images since 1990,\u201d said lead author Agust\u00edn S\u00e1nchez-Lavega of the University of the Basque Country in Spain. \u201cImages from NASA\u2019s Cassini spacecraft, which orbited Saturn between 2004 and 2017, showed no inkling of a long-lived formation, either. The Hubble data confirmed the feature\u2019s presence back to 2023.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The wave is an interesting three-dimensional feature that extends through multiple layers of the atmosphere within one of the planet\u2019s jet streams. Because Hubble can image the planet in multiple wavelengths, the decagon\u2019s location appears to shift between observations, as each wavelength penetrates the atmosphere to a different degree.<\/p>\n<p>Questions About Saturn<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most intriguing part to me is that this seems to have just formed recently,\u201d said Simon. \u201cThe question is, why did it suddenly form now when we haven\u2019t seen one before?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/the-department-of-defense-just-announced-the-launch-of-its-new-ai-task-force\/\" class=\"mask-img\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"120\" height=\"120\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/AI-Task-Force-120x120.jpg\" class=\"attachment-codetipi-15zine-120-120 size-codetipi-15zine-120-120 wp-post-image lazyload\" alt=\"AI Task Force\"  data- style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 120px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 120\/120;\"\/>\t\t\t<\/a><br \/>\n\t\t&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Recognizing Saturn\u2019s decagonal wave is only a first step. Follow-up observations to collect more data and computer models to piece together what is occurring on the planet will be required to firmly grasp the phenomenon. Questions remain about how it formed, how long it may last, and how similar it is compared to the northern hexagonal wave.<\/p>\n<p>One thing the team will be sure to watch for in their continued observations is whether the shape evolves or maintains its decagonal structure.
