The work that Brian Wilson<\/a> and The Beach Boys did well and truly has stood the test of time, and for good reason.\u00a0<\/p>\n On June 11th, 2025, a statement was posted on social media that shook people to their core, which read, \u201cWe are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away. We are at a loss for words right now. Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving. We realise that we are sharing our grief with the world. Love & Mercy.\u201d<\/p>\n When Wilson passed away, the musical world was essentially forced to a brutal stop, as people needed to adjust to a world that no longer had the greatest songwriter of all time in it. Tributes poured in from musicians, artists and music lovers all around the world who acknowledged the man that they all considered one of the greatest songwriters ever.\u00a0<\/p>\n One of the many messages that people posted came from Questlove, the drummer for The Roots<\/a>. He spoke about the Smile album, a record which was incredibly difficult for Wilson to eventually put together. He wrote about how difficult the process was for the older musician, but then also said how, without his expert musicianship, there would have been a lot of people who simply wouldn\u2019t exist as their original influence was no longer there.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI hate he went thru what he went thru to create this album,\u201d he said, \u201cBut man, without him I dunno how so many that came after felt safe to express a feeling of sadness that most humans would be otherwise ridiculed\/punished for.\u201d<\/p>\n As people continued to write about the relationship they had both with Wilson and with The Beach Boys, it became apparent that there really weren\u2019t a lot of songs that listeners seemed to dislike. People close enough to his discography will know that there were a few bad tracks floating around out there. For instance, who could ever forget when Wilson attempted rapping? Or The Beach Boys\u2019 rough cover of Chuck Berry\u2019s \u2018Rock and Roll Music\u2019<\/a>?\u00a0<\/p>\n These were minor blips in what was a career of quality, though. There aren\u2019t a lot of songs Wilson wrote out there which are widely disliked; however, when it came to tracks that he thought everybody liked, he only set aside four particular numbers. He affectionately referred to these universally loved tracks as \u201csweet, pretty, angelic songs that people liked\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n Further reading: From The Vault<\/strong><\/p>\n So, what were the songs that Wilson thought everybody in the world was a fan of? The lucky few that he singled out were \u2018Caroline, No\u2019, \u2018Surfer Girl\u2019, \u2018In My Room\u2019 and \u2018God Only Knows\u2019.<\/a> Wilson is right, these songs are pretty and angelic, and it\u2019s also hard to imagine anybody in their right mind not liking them, but it\u2019s also hard to understand what separated them from a lot of the other Beach Boys music.\u00a0<\/p>\n If you were to offer up these four tracks to Beach Boys and Brian Wilson fans around the world, and then ask them for four offerings of tracks that everybody adores, chances are you will get very few overlapping answers. This is a real testament to everything that Wilson did as a songwriter, as while these are the four universally loved tracks in his opinion, there are a lot more where that came from.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
