The council says relying on police assistance in this manner is not sustainable long-term.

They add that contractors must also undertake removals in the darkness for their own safety.

A council spokesperson has reiterated that the decision is ‘not about stopping people flying flags’ but rather focused on ‘unauthorised attachments’ on public infrastructure.

<img width="646" height="431" src="https://www.europesays.com/uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/SEI_310835384-2e93.jpg" class="article-image wp-image-29542792" alt="BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 05: Co-founder of Raise the Colours, Ryan Bridge, asks a question as UK Party Leader Nigel Farage participates in a discussion with Jeremy Kyle (not pictured) during day two of the Reform UK party conference at the National Exhibition Centre on September 05, 2026 in Birmingham, England. Reform UK enters its September 2026 annual party conference facing a recent dip in opinion polls, dropping to 22%???23% in national voting intention after peaking at 28% in May. For the first time in over 18 months, the party has slipped behind the Conservatives into third place in select polling, squeezed by a resurgent Labour Party under Prime Minister Andy Burnham and new competition on the right. This was the council effectively declaring itself bankrupt.

Since then, the authority has been under significant financial pressure and carried more than £3.5billion in debt, more than any local authority in the country.

Critiquing the flag removal scheme, Councillor Rajbir Singh, Reform UK’s shadow cabinet member for finance, said Union Flags and St George’s Crosses should not be viewed as symbols requiring removal, voicing disapproval of the decision to commit millions of pounds to taking them down while services elsewhere are cut.

On the other hand, Councillor Jane Baston, cabinet member for equalities, communities and social justice, defended the spending of public funds.

Baston said the strategy is lawful and based on evidence around public safety, asking residents to only fly flags where they have permission to.

<img width="646" height="431" src="https://www.europesays.com/uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/SEI_310547761-2f15.jpg" class="article-image wp-image-29530177" alt="epa13209510 Reform UK leader Nigel Farage attends the business day of Reform UK Annual Conference at NEC in Birmingham, Britain, 03 September 2026.
