NORTH CAROLINA, USA \u2014 North Carolinians can file claims against genetics company 23andMe until July 14 as a part of an investigation into a massive data breach from 2023, Attorney General Jeff Jackson said.<\/p>\n
Nearly seven million customers<\/a> with Chinese and\/or Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry had their data hacked and sold on the dark web after 23andMe failed to secure their privacy between April and October 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n 23andMe has since settled a lawsuit concerning the data breach for $30 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n RELATED:\u00a0<\/strong>What 23andMe\u2019s bankruptcy means for your data<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n However, 23andMe has been in decline ever since, having declared bankruptcy earlier this year, then bought by biotechnology company\u00a0Regeneron Pharmaceuticals<\/a> only two months later.\u00a0<\/p>\n Jackson has investigated the DNA testing company for some time and has urged customers to delete information from 23andMe’s databases.\u00a0<\/p>\n Jackson continues to investigate and asks any North Carolinians to file a claim against 23andMe if they:\u00a0<\/p>\n Folks who want to file a general claim<\/a> or a\u00a0claim concerning the 2023 data breach<\/a> can file through the Attorney General’s office.<\/p>\n\n
