in Brussels, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen will begin her week in Greenland, where she is expected to announce a new \u20ac200m funding package on Monday (7 September).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The visit follows weeks of tension earlier this year linked to repeated demands by US president Donald Trump to buy and gain control of Greenland.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while a deal was announced by Nato chief Mark Rutte in June to \u201ctake more responsibility for the <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/197316\/the-case-for-putting-a-european-military-presence-in-greenland\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">defence of the Arctic<\/a>\u201c, von der Leyen\u2019s visit is a clear signal to Washington that the EU intends to stay involved in Arctic affairs as it can: with investment and offering Nuuk <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/197336\/the-difficulties-of-finding-a-democratic-solution-to-the-greenland-crisis\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">long-term economic partnership<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/217462\/as-trump-renews-greenland-threat-what-next-for-iceland-svalbard-and-aland\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/54947042187_79a6252e2d_o-600x399.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the run-up to next week\u2019s state of the union address (SOTEU), expected to cover everything from the EU\u2019s new security strategy and migration to social media restrictions for children and climate, von der Leyen is also meeting with political groups in Brussels this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In EU jargon, that is the Parliament\u2019s Conference of Presidents (the parliament president Roberta Metsola and political group leaders), who will meet
