An eastern entrance to Bristol Temple Meads station opened on September 7 as part of the completion of a new university campus and innovation quarter, built on the site of a former Royal Mail sorting office and close to the former Bath Road locomotive depot which closed in 1995.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Delivered by Network Rail in partnership with the Bristol Temple Quarter partners, the new entrance provides direct access between Bristol Temple Meads and the University of Bristol\u2019s new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus, whilst improving access for communities in St Philip\u2019s Marsh and the east of the city.<\/p>\n

The \u00a323m entrance is expected to serve around 2.5 million passengers per year by 2030, and it forms part of longer-term work to double the capacity of the station. The entrance was funded through a share of a \u00a394.7m government grant given to the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority; this will ultimately see three more access points added at Temple Meads.<\/p>\n

University campus<\/p>\n

The eastern entrance opens directly onto the university campus, which is at the core of the Bristol Temple Quarter regeneration programme. This is a partnership between WECA and Bristol City Council, who formed the Bristol Temple Quarter LLP to drive the project forward in 2024, working closely with Network Rail, the University of Bristol and Homes England.<\/p>\n

To create the entrance, Network Rail extended the main station subway beneath platforms 13 and 15, excavating through existing structures before carrying out drainage, foundation and station improvement works. Construction began in late 2023, with the main building works completed in October 2024 ahead of the entrance opening alongside the University of Bristol\u2019s Enterprise Campus ahead of the 2026-27 academic year.<\/p>\n

The university has moved several of its more high-profile faculties to the new campus, including the Business School, partly to improve accessibility for visitors from outside Bristol. While the new facility will be have\u00a0 4 600 students, the institution\u2019s historic campus remains in Clifton, around two miles away. From September 8, a revised bus route 8 will link the two locations, but as a result the bus will no longer stop at the station\u2019s main forecourt.<\/p>\n

Getting the west moving<\/p>\n

\u2018Bristol Temple Meads has been at the heart of the city since it opened in 1840, and this new entrance ensures it will play an even greater role in its future\u2019, said Marcus Jones, Network Rail\u2019s Great Western Route Director. \u2018By connecting the railway directly to the Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus and one of the UK\u2019s most exciting innovation districts, we\u2019re connecting new jobs, investment and economic growth to the rest of the west and beyond.\u2019<\/p>\n

Helen Godwin, Mayor of the West of England, said \u2018our investment in the future of Bristol Temple Meads is a crucial step in getting the west [of England] moving, building on the extensive roof repairs which were recently completed. With the old sorting office replaced by the Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus and a brand-new entrance for Brunel\u2019s iconic railway station, this gateway to innovation, new homes and new jobs will soon be well and truly open.\u2019<\/p>\n
