\n\t\t\tTHE NEXT generation of engineers were called on to predict the future of Birmingham Airport\u2019s Air Rail Link.<\/p>\n
Students from WMG Academy Trust were asked to rethink the existing system and propose ways it could become greener, more accessible and more customer\u2011focused.<\/p>\n
The 585-metre Air Rail Link connects Birmingham International Station with the airport terminal, providing a gateway for millions of passengers and staff each year.<\/p>\n
The initiative forms part of the airport\u2019s wider engagement with schools, colleges and education partners across the Midlands, helping young people build the skills needed to support the region\u2019s growing economy.<\/p>\n
The project formed part of the airport\u2019s wider commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2033, while inspiring young people to consider careers in engineering, infrastructure and aviation.<\/p>\n
Working in teams, the students developed and presented their proposals to a panel of airport specialists after hearing from the Airport\u2019s chief executive, Nick Barton, who spoke on the power of collaboration and fresh thinking.<\/p>\n
\nTom Denton, head of sustainability at Birmingham Airport, said: \u201cIt was a privilege to be a part of the judging panel and get a front-row seat to the quality of ideas they confidently put forward.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe students challenged assumptions, thought outside the box and came up with some impressive solutions that reflected the kind of innovation our industry needs. It\u2019s encouraging to see the level of enthusiasm and fresh ideas these young individuals are prepared to bring to the workforce.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
The winning team of students were also offered a two-week summer internship with the airport\u2019s infrastructure team to get an inside look at what it takes to bring their ideas to life.<\/p>\n
