On Monday, the European Union took significant steps to reassure Greenland by proposing a strengthened partnership and committing substantial financial support. This initiative follows recent assertions by US President Donald Trump<\/strong> about potential US control of the island, which have raised concerns among Greenlandic leaders.<\/p>\n

During a visit to Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong> announced a \u20ac200 million funding commitment over the next two years. This investment aims to assist Greenland in addressing critical issues such as climate change, enhancing internet connectivity, and improving infrastructure in hydropower, fisheries, and education.<\/p>\n

The EU\u2019s renewed focus on Greenland comes in response to Trump\u2019s persistent claims, which have raised important questions about sovereignty and have prompted significant pushback from leaders in Greenland and Denmark. These developments have contributed to escalating tensions among NATO allies.<\/p>\n

\u201cGreenland\u2019s future is for the people of Greenland and Denmark to decide. No one else,\u201d von der Leyen said. \u201cTerritorial integrity, sovereignty, the inviolability of borders. These are fundamental principles of international law.\u201d<\/p>\n

EU to support Greenland\u2019s development<\/strong><\/p>\n

Funds are also designated for improved housing, support for small businesses, and sustainable tourism. Von der Leyen also expressed her intention to double EU budget support for Greenland to approximately half a billion euros starting in 2028.<\/p>\n

\u201cGreenland can count on the EU,\u201d she said, after signing an EU-Greenland declaration with Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen<\/strong> and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen<\/strong>. Greenland is a semiautonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark.<\/p>\n

You have stood by us and continue to do so. We feel this support deeply and are incredibly grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Denmark and European allies against Trump\u2019s pressure<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Trump administration pressured Denmark, with Prime Minister Frederiksen noting their gratitude for support from European and global partners. In January, Denmark and seven European allies sent military personnel to Greenland for exercises aimed at strengthening Arctic security and supporting Greenland\u2019s sovereignty.<\/p>\n

In response, Trump threatened tariffs on Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. These countries condemned the threats, arguing they undermined transatlantic relations, and Trump later backed down after NATO agreed to increase Arctic security.<\/p>\n

Recently, Von der Leyen visited Greenland as 11 NATO countries began military exercises involving around 400 personnel, including special forces from Canada, Denmark, and Finland. No US troops are involved in the Arctic Shield drills, which run from 7 to 18 September.<\/p>\n
