Researchers tracked body weight, fat mass, blood sugar levels and fat absorption.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The results were striking. Mice that lacked the fructose-processing enzyme in their intestines consumed the same number of calories as other mice but gained significantly less weight, remained leaner and showed better insulin sensitivity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">According to the researchers, the difference appeared to stem from changes in the gut microbiome.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">When fructose was not broken down normally in the small intestine, it traveled farther through the digestive system, altering the composition of gut bacteria. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">These microbial changes affected specialized structures called lacteals, tiny vessels in the intestine that absorb dietary fat. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The altered mice developed shorter lacteals that absorbed less fat, meaning more fat passed through the body rather than entering the bloodstream.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">To test whether the microbiome was responsible, researchers transplanted gut bacteria from the modified mice into normal mice. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The recipients developed similar changes in their intestinal fat-absorbing structures and also absorbed less fat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The findings, published in Science Advances,\u00a0suggest that fructose may influence body weight not only through the calories it provides but also by <a data-ylk=\"slk:affecting how efficiently the body absorbs fat from food;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/new-health-risks-artificial-sweeteners-identified-study-12151481\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">affecting how efficiently the body absorbs fat from food<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">However, the researchers caution that the study was conducted in mice, and the findings do not prove that high-fructose corn syrup has the same effect in people. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Further research will be needed to determine whether similar biological pathways operate in humans and whether they could be targeted to prevent obesity or metabolic disease.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Rather than acting solely as a source of excess calories, fructose may be reshaping the gut in ways that help the body extract and store more energy from the foods we eat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Newsweek reached out to UC Irvine School of Medicine for comment on the findings via email.<\/p>\n<p>Reference<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Lopez, M L.,\u00a0et al., Intestinal fructose catabolism promotes obesity and insulin resistance via ileal lacteal remodeling.
