LONDON, Sept 8 (Reuters) – British retailers said on Tuesday that they would seek to create 100,000 jobs for young \u200cpeople not in employment or education by the time \u200cof next national election due in 2029, as part of a government drive \u200bto stem a rise in youth employment. <\/p>\n
The British Retail Consortium trade body and the Department for Work and Pensions said they were also launching a new voluntary work placement programme for young people \u200caged 18-24 that would \u2060help them get experience for permanent retail jobs. <\/p>\n
“Too many young people are trapped in a vicious cycle \u2060where they need experience to get a job and need a job to get experience \u2013 leaving them stuck while the world of \u200bwork drifts \u200bfurther out of reach,” Prime \u200bMinister Andy Burnham said in \u200ca statement announcing the programmes. <\/p>\n
\u2022 Britain has just under 1 million young people aged 16-24 who are not in education, employment or training (NEET), and earlier in the year the number was its highest since 2013 <\/p>\n
\u2022 Work placements of 2-4 weeks will be offered \u200cto young people aged 18-24 who \u200bare receiving unemployment benefits <\/p>\n
\u2022 Retailers offering \u200bthe work placements include \u200bAldi, Amazon, Asda, JD Sports, John Lewis Partnership, Marks & \u200cSpencer, Morrisons, Primark, and Tesco <\/p>\n
\u2022 \u200bAround 11,000 work \u200bplacements will be available initially <\/p>\n
\u2022 Some employer organisations have previously blamed increases in Britain’s minimum wage and higher employer social \u200bsecurity contributions for \u200crising youth unemployment <\/p>\n
\u2022 Retailers and their suppliers account for \u200bnearly a quarter of youth employment in Britain <\/p>\n
